Bama/GT Series Canceled?

Let's see:

1) Poster gets texts from friends
2) Friends claim to be at dinner with Saban (apparently the dinner was over by at least 7:12 central time, given the time of the op)
3) The dinner was in Birmingham
4) Saban was playing golf the same day in a tournament in Atlanta. Paul Johnson beat the crap out of him
5) the first updates of the results are at 7:15 p.m. eastern time (LINK)
6) Which isn't surprising, since the players didn't leave until (LINK) 6 p.m. EST. Leaving Saban 2 hours and 12 minutes to: get from the Reynolds Plantation to a restaurant in Birmingham, and for your friends to finish dinner and text you.

So, if your friends were at a booster dinner, it might be possible. But it looks like smack talk.

Congrats! You've just posted an off-season made-up-fill-the-time rumor. It may be true, but it is unlikely that your friends heard it that way.

For what it's worth, I heard the same thing from an independant source. One that was at the dinner.

All I'm saying is this looks very much like a booster dinner/rumor generator. And we all know---and even our own coaches do this---that there is a lot of puffery going on at those types of events. This doesn't exactly look like it was a private dinner at a nice restaurant where such a statement might gain a lot more credibility. If the series was cancelled, I don't think this is a credible statement of who cancelled the series because, as we all know, booster dinners tend to involve statements designed to rally the faithful.

I think it would be a huge mistake to cancel the series, it is the type of game that could launch a great season for either team. If the series is cancelled, I suspect it is a mutual decision by both schools, and I wouldn't be surprised if, instead, we see GT v. Alabama at the dome, one game only. The dome game likely generates more revenue for both schools than the two other games, and they free up one game for a home game (more money). My bet is that this is what happens.

The dinner wasn't over when I received the two texts. They sent them independently of one another (each of them didn't know the other was there) at the same time. I'll show you the exact texts and times:

Friend 1 (7:07): "Coach Saban just said that yall are trying to get out of the contract with us."

Friend 2 (7:07): "Saban just said Bama and GT probably will not play in 2012 and 2013"

I'm not here to start rumors. I'm just relaying what I heard. If there is anyone IN THE KNOW who has any information, I'd like to hear it. Like I said, I've been looking forward to the game for a long time and would like to know.

It wasn't a dinner for major boosters or anything. The two people I received text messages from where 1.) My 26-year-old sister (Bama law school grad), and 2.) My 20-year old buddy (Current Bama Undergrad). So, no, they aren't major boosters.

Like I said, I heard something from two independent reputable sources, and I'm trying to substantiate it. I apologize if I opened a can of worms.

Saban is just mad that even though he used the binoculars in the golf tournament, he still lost to Paul Johnson. Can't cheat and win all the time!

Right, and what I'm suggesting is that it may happen, but you can't take things like that as truthful, because every coach says that sort of thing when they are speaking to a large crowd of boosters. If it was a small gathering of major boosters it would be the type of thing you take seriously.

It may very well be true, but usually these are the types of agreements both parties want to scuttle. As I said earlier, my bet is one game at the dome, not a two-game series.

I just got a text message from some friends in Birmingham. They were attending a dinner in which Nick Saban was speaking. According to Saban, the series with Bama in 2013 and 2014 is probably going to be canceled. According to him, WE are the ones trying to break the contract.

Has anyone in the know heard about this?

LOL, and just why are you posting this here?

Well, he said "probably" right? Which means pretty much nothing so far. Someone email DRad and let's wait and see what he has to say. Odds are one of us needs to change something and there is a problem with logistics.

It's possible an unrelated OOC opponent had to change up their schedule, which makes our home schedule unbalanced and we're asking Bama to try to accomodate us by switching around games. It's possible, for example, that we could somehow end up with only 5 home games the year we're playing at Bama and DRad has to switch things around to level out the revenue.

My Bama friends and I have been looking forward to this game ever since it was announced. I'm pretty sure Bama is the only "old-time" rival that I actually respect, and I would like to get it started up again. This is one of the major reasons why I want Tech to join the SEC.

There are many reasons that we might have to reschedule the series, but I am confident it has nothing to do with Johnson being scared to play them.

If the series is cancelled, I would imagine DRad will shortly issue a statement dealing with the reasons. and I am confident it will be a good reason.

But what do you want?

I'd be disappointed if this were true. Hell, this season's home schedule sux. I love GT and somewhat justify continuing buying tix based on who we have coming up. Honestly, if we start to schedule like Bama's last year (FIU, UTC, North Texas) I will eventually just stop coming. I don't pay to see the worst teams in CFB come to town.

And people on here got mad when Colin Peek said Alabama had better fans than us. If the shoe fits....

Is there a transcript of Saban's speech? Whatever Saban said could have easily been taken out of context or the text itself was incorrect.
