Bama/GT Series Canceled?

Only thing I can think of is he's serious about winning a national title and wants to build a schedule conducive to doing so. Bama would be great for the fans but it's pretty much a complete negative if you're trying to win a national title.

We will not compete for a national title playing an easy OOC schedule. NEVER. We are not Alabama, Florida (of course UF does play FSU), Texas, or LSU. We need to play and beat the best if we want to be considered.

We don't play an easy OOC schedule. We have Georgia every year, which automatically puts us ahead of the majority of schools' OOC schedules. In addition, we generally play another mid-level BCS team like Vandy or Miss. State, which means we're miles ahead of most others. Adding Bama won't do anything for us.

But a Bama game would be fun, feature two great teams with lots of tradition, and be a chance for bragging rights. That's what college football should be about, not doing everything you can to try to win a MNC if it takes away from them.

I don't necessarily disagree. I'm just saying that it could be one reason that we would want to duck Bama. The only one I can think of, really.

I think it probably has to do more with scheduling and flexibility of the other OCC games, or with trying to balance out the schedules so its not super heavy, super light every other year. Drads been trying to work to fix that for awihle.
 
I always view a game like this as a "no lose" for the underdog. If you lose, it is what everyone expected. If it's close, you look like a contender. If you win, you're the top story on ESPN and the talk of the town for a couple weeks. Alabama, on the other hand, playing out of conference against a unique offense, would be taking a big unnecessary risk to play us. This, and the fact that CPJ is a macho fearless stud, tells me it is the Tide that is afraid.

It's a big "lose" if you end up going 11-1 and miss out on the title game.

But if you win, it goes down as the undisputed greatest season in GT history. Now if we go undefeated that year, we still may not play in the NC anyway over a one loss Alabama, Florida, Texas, LSU, USC, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Oklahoma, or Nebraska and we'll get to hear about "Sure, they are undefeated, but they dodged Alabama"

Sure that's possible, but extremely unlikely given the modifications to the BCS formula since the Auburn situation and the fact that we still play one of the tougher OOC schedules in the nation.

When you're talking about national title aspirations, it's far more likely that we'd lose to Bama and that would keep us out of the title game than it is that we would go undefeated and a 1 loss team would get in over us. We may play in the ACC, but we're not Boise State or Utah.

I still think there would be more downside for Bama than for us.

Bama already plays a tough schedule as well. They DON'T need the wildcard of finding out whether the TO will be a mystery to diagnose for the defense.

GTs upside for beating Bama is huge. Bama beating GT probably would be regarded as expected in most years. Yet, I would rate the game as a toss-up without knowing which way the teams might develop. (Bama "could" be on a down-cycle and Tech on an up-cycle.)

But I get the point. Going undefeated in a BCS conference is the best way to a MNC game. The odds are against more than three teams in the BCS conferences going undefeated.
 
Right lonestar. I think it's probably Bama who asked for the series to be postponed. I was just trying to say why we might have asked for it given what Saban said.

I said right when PJ was hired that the Bama-GT series would never happen because there's almost no upside to a major team playing an OOC game against us. They could go put a UNC or an FSU on their schedule, get the same SOS benefit, and not have to prepare for an unorthodox offense.

If you lose, you probably didn't deserve to be in the title game, anyway. If you are afraid to play someone, you definitely don't deserve to be in the title game.

Actually, the modifications are more likely to put 1 loss Auburn in than 0 loss GT in. Alabama, LSU or Florida would be in with one loss - absolutely. If Ohio State or USC or Oklahoma or Texas also had one loss, we'd be undefeated and playing in the Orange Bowl looking in. The voter portion just loves the SEC.

Well now we're talking about a matter of opinion. Personally, I think we'll be in over any 1 loss team if we go undefeated. If we were to get left out in favor of a 1 loss team, the ACC might as well pack up and stop playing football.
