Bennett vs Reggie....

We started 2 possessions at mid field after we went behind and another on our 35. Our red zone offense is ATROCIOUS. We need to revive that Peanut butter spread formation they tried in the late 60's rather than keep trying the same thing over and over again to fail in the redzone. Apparently we can not run block in the redzone, so we need to open up the field for Tater. Think what Nesbitt could do out of a formation like that.

Nesbit is our future. Play him now we have nothing to lose. I waited a few games to pass judgment on TB but can now say TB vs RB is a wash. But at least Reggie would get fired up.

We saw what TB could do with Calvin last year in the Gator Bowl. Sure, WVU had a crappy pass defense, but how many crappy defenses did Reggie fail to do well against in his years at Tech? Reggie and Taylor is not a wash; Reggie had possibly the best receiver in the nation last year, maybe the best PLAYER in the nation last year, and Taylor Bennett has a very mediocre #1 receiver and a good freshman. Take Calvin away from our team last year and what do you think would happen?

His numbers suck, though, and would have been wretched if we didn't complete the hail mary TD.

That was not a hail mary - it was a very pretty pass that his Thomas perfectly in stride.

Bennett did not play badly - his numbers were hurt by drops of several balls that should have been caught, particularly the 3rd and 20 that Thomas dropped.

Taylor didn't play badly, but he also didn't play well. His completion percentage even with the drops wouldn't have been much over 50% and he threw way too many balls up for grabs deep. He also has to learn how to avoid a 6'5" DE leaping right in front of him. The loss wasn't his fault, but fair or not, when you're the QB you're expected to win it when it's tight.

That's true, but the question was if Taylor is worse than Reggie, and Reggie lost a lot of games for us. It could also be said he won some games for us, but personally I think that was more Calvin than Reggie(see: Clemson '04).

Taylor's only problem as I see it is indecision. I can't tell you how many times I saw him pump the ball trying to figure out when and who to throw it to. He doesn't seem to make up his mind well.

We have to bring Nesbitt in immediately and we need to bee running the Little Joe Option.

.

Well gnats, we'd probably get that installed about the 4th game of the '09 season. Same with wishbone comments.

We are forgeting what Reggie could do! When it was long yard situations he could get it with his feet. We are missing that threat this year. I know TB is Pocket passer - better arm- smarter..etc, but when its three and out defensive's get tired.

I think your are right about missing that threat, but a lot of us remember what Reggie could, would, and did do in SEVERAL games...melt down and turn it over.

His ugag games were beyond all reason...every one of em.

Kind of a tradeoff to me. Reggie could get you a first down running sometimes. But he could also turn a 6 yard loss into a 20 yarder by running backwards.

I have said it before the season started and I will say it again. I have no confidence in winning against an adequate defense with TB as our quarterback. He only started in high school his senior year and his accuracy has not imporved dramatically as you couls see in the scrimmages. You can look at his dancing feet and tell he is nervous as hell in the pocket. Josh Nesbitt is our future and deserves a chance to play. TB has done nothing to keep him on the bench.

I agree there is no reason not to play him at this point.

Sorry guys, did any of you watch the game?

Or is there something in Tenuta's contract that forbids anyone from questioning the performance of the defense?

TB played from behind when he shouldn't have to do so. Those games that RB "won" were really won because our defense played incredibly. In many cases they scored so the offense didn't need to do so.

RB was a moderate running threat, not a great one. And he was so inaccurate that he was only trusted to fling the ball far downfield to limit the damage if it were intercepted.

TB is not playing perfectly, but he is waaaay down the list of problems. I don't have a problem with mixing in a different QB even for variety, but I doubt it would make a difference. Nesbitt can't block for himslef either.

The OL and the D needs to start living up to the Hype is the bottom line. And CG needs to deliver more that slogans and t-shirts in player preparation.

By definition, it IS all Gailey's fault no matter what the problem might be. He gets the big bucks; he recruits the players; he decides who plays and who doesn't; he hires the assistant coaches; and he has exhausted years of excuses. There comes a time when you can't keep looking elsewhere. THIS year was supposed to be our year, according to the press, according to the team , and according to Gailey.

I am NOT one of those calling for Gailey's head after the first year. You can't succeed without some sort of continuity, but I fear right now we have the wrong kind of continuity.

It is time to beat UGA and win more than seven games, or leave.

I think you're memory is a little off. The big wins we had with Reggie were more often than not when we got the lead and were able to hang on. Plus we have had very few defensive scores over the years so it is rare that our defense could have scored so the O didn't have to.

I'm not blaming Taylor nor am I saying I wish Reggie were back. What I am saying is that he needs to improve as does the rest of our team. He doesn't get a pass because he's the new guy anymore IMO. We're 4 games in and we're 2-2 in conference. This season is getting old real fast and we're falling behind.

Evidently our defense started out tired. UVA scored on each possession and it wasn't on single fluke plays either. Time of possession was only about 4 minutes less than UVA even though we were playing catch-up most of the game being forced to pass more than we want.

My memory is fine.

We did not win a single game with RB that the defense did not play very well. And he lost a few even though the defense played well because he put the D in bad situations.

My point about the defense scoring is that the defense put the offense in good situations with turnovers. RB did his job in those situations to close the deal, but we never simply outscored anyone with RB at QB. And I don't think TB can simply outscore another team either, nor should he be expected to do so. He can complement a good running game, but he is closer to Trent Dilfer than Peyton Manning.

I am not giving TB a "pass" anymore than anyone else. But he is nowhere near our worst problem at this point.

Reggie wouldn't of ducked out of bounds 1 yard short of the first down on that scramble either.

You obvioulsy did not watch the actual run TB made on that play. I was right there on the 20 yd line. No one would have made those 18 extra inches needed for the 1st down, (not even Larry Czonka (sp)) the two pursuing linbackers were there to see to that. (there might have been two neck injuries on that play instead of one. ) TB's run and his reaching dive for the line marker was awesome to say the least. The refs spot could have been more generous.

The spot ended up not making any difference with a false start called on the next play.
