Bobby Dodd Expansion

I think he was talking about the lower bowl and upper deck, which are both as symmetrical as you can get. As opposed to BDS, which has no symmetry anywhere in the stadium.

Just look at an aerial photo of BC's stadium.

IMO, BC' stadium is the "base model" for changes to BDS.

The non-suites side of BC's stadium look nearly identical to BDS East side.

If the BDS lower east bowl was extended all the way around to the West side, it would look identical to BC stadium's lower bowl.

Looking at how the lower bowl extends from the East aide around the North side, you can see how the lower West would be configured in a symmetrical set-up.

I think the Upper West could be setup differently at BDS.

My understanding is the extension of UE towards street has been looked at and is not doable. The street, if I understood correctly, does not belong to GT but the City.

I love the idea that our upper decks do not curve away from the field. Makes for better viewing.

At the same time I will never understand why it was not built symmetrically to start with.

That sucks. Maybe we can pull a "you let uga push its engineering (sic) department, throw us a öööö bone!" The UE is really the only rationale expansion spot.

Yes, we need to look at BC. Are you kidding me?

Alumni stadium is a dump, but I guess it looks nice and pretty and symmetrical from the sky! Oh brother!

I don't know why/how you see that. The grade on the west stands is too different to mesh with the wrap around from the south part of the stadium. I see what you are trying to do, but the west stands are probably the ones that can't be touched. For one, you've get Tech tower right behind them.

Two, if you make the lower west the same as the lower east you are probably taking about 10k out of the stadium - maybe up to $10 mil worth of premium ticket revenue, concessions, parking, etc.

Rather than try to make it symmetrical with the east stands, maybe it would work to make it a continuation of the NORTH stands.

Something like this (excuse my terrible photoshopping skills)

A much more massive renovation, but one that would be awesome, would be to raze all of the buildings/dorms east of the stadium. You could build out the east stands to be as big as, if not bigger than, the west stands. You could put in a sweet food/game concourse and a nicer stadium entrance east of the stadium on north ave. You could also add VIP amenities like an underground parking deck accessible from 3rd/North Ave (that directly connects to the boxes, not unlike the upper red deck at the falcons stadium).
I don't like the idea of razing the historic dormitories in an attempt to enlarge the stadium.

Why can't we connect the west stands with teh rest of the stadium?

Why don't we just leave the place alone? I don't see Red Sox fans clamoring to tear down the big green monster to put seats in and make a symmetrical stadium. We have plenty of seats. I like my UN seats fine right now. I like my UE seats when I was there. I liked my UW seats when I was there - a bit less than the UE and UN seats. Does anyone really care about the symmetry of the stadium during a ballgame?

You're not tryign to "mesh" the current North stands to the current West stands. That wont work.

I think it will require gutting the West stands like the East stands were.

You could make the lower West look exactly like the lower East.
Then a row on suites (or maybe two rows), just like the East stands.

Think of a 3-Tier West stands, with the lower West looking exactly likethe lower East, as part of kind of a tri-level look like this pic of Byrd Stadium, but with rows of suites separating the different vertical section levels going upwards.

I was trying to mesh the current West stands to the current north stands. That keeps the capacity up. In addition to the bottom lower bowl section, the north has a second (top) lower bowl section that the east stands don't have (see, e.g., sections 112-114). I would add those to your proposal on the west. I would also copy the UN around to the west. The upper deck to the east is smaller than the one in the UN. There are also suites on the north that would extend around to the west.

that was my second proposal, razing the west stands.

You know what might be really cool? Something like this-

017-1_pe1940s-1.jpg

Just get rid of the track, fill in the space on the south side with bleachers for students, put the AA offices on the north side (with stands on top), and put a second level on the west and east.

Dude, what are you talking about. You clearly know nothing about Fenway.

In 2003 seats were ADDED to the Green Monster.
In 2004 seats were created in right field.
In 2005 they added club/pavilion seats (adding 852 pavilion seats, 745 pavilion box seats, and room for 200 standing room only seats).
In 2008 boxes were added to the State Street pavillion level and seats were added along the left field line.
In 2009 they expanded the right field roofbox seating.
In 2011 they did a full remodal of the D concourse.

Since 1999 Fenway has undergone ELEVEN major construction projects. Fenway has undergone CONSTANT construction such that its capacity has changed over THIRTY TIMES since 1947.

And an aside - I don't care about symmetry. To be a better program though, we will need a bigger stadium (and to find fans to fill the stadium). Changing the east or west configuration could easily get us to 60-65k. Ideally we could get to the 66-67 range - that would put us even with Kentucky and VT.

One of the main drawbacks of our program is that we don't have a "big stage" so to speak. We would get a lot more recruits with a bigger (and more full) stadium.

The Fenway renovations were the point I was trying to make. Both stadiums date back to around the same time. (I think this is fenways 100th season too, in fact). Both have been adapted, modified, and expanded over the years. To me it's what makes both places great. I'll take Fenway over Turner Field just as I'd take BDS over Sanford.

Wow. Old photo. Early 50's ??

Check out the downtown Connector.

And Hemphill extending all the way from 10th to North Avenue, right thru the middle of campus.

Sometime between 1962 and 1966. Upper East is there but UW is not.
