I wonder if he regrets not jumping to a P5 program.

He had nine winning seasons in his first decade, including an 11-2 campaign that ended with a dominating bowl victory over an ACC team a season after a GT team finished 7th in the country running the TO. I bet he could have gotten a job at a pretty decent P5 schooll.
If he could have, he would have.

I agree. Certainly improvement in the front 4 on the DL, tackling, coverage and QB play. We will win 5 or 6 games this season.
I mean getting up for Clemson all off season is the easy part. Executing a game plan against Western Carolina, and beating them handily is the hard part. I liked the effort we saw at time, yes. However, this week will tell us much much more than last and that is the state of our program unfortunately.

How is Hawaii not at the bottom of the list? Vandy beat them 63-10.

list is P5 only plus cbs 131 is based on a vote of CBS writers whereas Bottom25 is spreadsheet based.
I just posted this for sake of comparison since some of the worst P5's will get into B25 later in season.
I'm rooting for Hawaii at #4 Michigan this week. Aren't you?

Army also has massive recruiting limitations. They don't play super tough schedules, but the acc has been down the last 3 years; we would've been smoked by army any time under Collins. They've also beaten ranked teams, and even took #5 Oklahoma to OT.

Yes, army has a few bad seasons in there too but they managed to bounce back. We're still can't get a 4th win in a season.

I've got nothing but respect for the service academies.
GO ARMY
BEAT NAVY

but they shouldn't be a measuring stick for us. Army's OT with OU is increasingly looking fluke'ish and, let's be honest - that OU team (and all OU teams under Riley) had Swiss Cheese for defense. You could run out on the field with ham and rye bread and make a helluva sammich after their games.
Army lost to a dismal Navy team last season. They should make a statue to Monken at West Point when he retires for what he's done for the program but we don't need him here.

Yep - bad bookmark on phone. But I checked Nebraska - 1:1 with a close loss to Northwestern - what gives??
Nebraska was 3-9 last year. They lost a close game to a Northwestern team who was 3-9 last year. That’d be like any team losing to Tech this year…

At least we are better than Kansas State.

I can’t blame the writer for not knowing our team to the nth degree, but there were most certainly signs that things have changed for the better.

- The DL actually put pressure on the QB. This was an obvious improvement. It didn’t last the whole game, but few teams will be able maintain a rush for four quarters against Clemson.
- Sims looked sharp. By and large, he made good decisions under duress, and most importantly he made plays. He played with confidence, and it showed in the strength and accuracy of his throws. Not perfect, but better.
- WR’s got open. That simply didn’t happen last year. And it happened against a GREAT secondary.
- Our DB’s we’re smothering Clemson WR’s all night - and we’ve got the PI calls to prove it. Those guys were aggressive and disruptive. Again, better.

So will those end up be marginal or game-changing improvements? Who knows, but if I could have picked five areas of improvement necessary for a good season, I would have picked all four + the OL (I don’t think we learned much in that area).

Definitely. That would be the greatest turnaround in CFB history. Routed by Vandy at home. Then two weeks later beat Michigan on the road.

Didn’t the blocking rules change because of us running the option?

So why would we go back to running a system that forces us to fight with one hand tied behind our back?

Also, CPJ was the best option guy alive. Anyother option guy like Monken would have been a significant downgrade.

Now, I wouldn’t mind hiring someone who runs a multiple offense (which includes many option principles)…like Friedgen did. But I don’t know who is out there who fits the bill. Goose? Bill O’Brien?

O'Brien stepped into the Penn State mess after Joe Pa was shown the door and won, what, eight games that year? With all that turmoil around the program?
That's a helluva coaching job.
He was a lousy GM in Houston, though.

Still, should Clown get the ax at the end of this season, I hope O'Brien is on Stansbury and Cabrera's do call list.

Big 14 pillow fight in week one?
