It certainly signs that things have changed for the better.
- The DL actually put pressure on the QB. This was an obvious improvement. It didn’t last the whole game, but few teams will be able maintain a rush for four quarters against Clemson.
- Sims looked sharp. By and large, he made good decisions under duress, and most importantly he made plays. He played with confidence, and it showed in the strength and accuracy of his throws. Not perfect, but better.
- WR’s got open. That simply didn’t happen last year. And it happened against a GREAT secondary.
- Our DB’s we’re smothering Clemson WR’s all night - and we’ve got the PI calls to prove it. Those guys were aggressive and disruptive. Again, better.
So will those end up be marginal or game-changing improvements? Who knows, but if I could have picked five areas of improvement necessary for a good season, I would have picked all four + the OL (I don’t think we learned much in that area).
We tackled better, Sims' effort on the sideline being one of the worst tackle attempts, and White in particular showed he can be a force.
But ... Clemson's OL is still pretty meh. And their receivers are not nearly what they had in the past, though the coverage was mostly pretty good. Their tight ends, though, got open a couple of times and came up with impactful plays.
Sims was OK. He missed a wide open Carter on the sidelines for a big gain and also bounced a pass to someone in the flats. Knowing there was no way this O line could withstand Clemson's front four, it had to be quick throws almost all night long, and the slot guy is usually the guy who is going to get open. So that worked. We also got lucky when Sims got sandwiched and lost the ball on a sack, but we had two OL get on it before another of Clemson's maulers could get on it. FTRS had his advanced stats, and his PFF grade of 60 was not that strong. Plus, he was 0 of 3 on throws over 20 yards.
The screen game, until Clemson started sniffing it out, worked well.
This OL vs Clemson DL in game one is a bad litmus test. Clemson's D line, especially when Murphy gets 100%, is going to be tough on just about everybody.
