Calculus

What is calculus to you

  • A central and unassailable tenant of GT’s academic prestige

  • A religious sacrament to the Hillnerds that is a huge ‘recruit against’ tool

If we’re changing coaches, is it a good time to address the core issue that GT has had with academic elitism? We’ve been nothing more than a mediocre program that flashes every 10 years or so since the 50s. Is ‘calculus for all’ a barrier to success on the gridiron?

I didn't go to Tech so I probably shouldn't get a vote but I have no problem making it a little easier for athletes. I'm not saying add basket weaving but some kind of management degree that you can hide them in is fine with me. I don't feel like 100 or so athletes will devalue you degree any.

To me, it's the branch of mathematics that deals with the finding and properties of derivatives and integrals of functions, by methods originally based on the summation of infinitesimal differences.
So you voted #2 then?

Management majors take pussy calculus anyway. This is and has always been a cop out.
Do coaches hash that out in the living room? Don’t worry son, it’s pussy calculus. You’ll be fine.

Calculus is not the issue that has gotten us in poor positions so often in the last 60 or so years.

That being said, it would be better for every GT alum, fan, grad if calculus was never taught at all if it is hurting the school this much.

The HillNerds might actually have to go out and work for a living.

Sadly, our opponents no longer have to use this as a way to successful recruit against us.

Can you show me where I’ll need pussy calculus in my NFL career, coach?
“Well all statistics show that you’re more likely to end up a trashman than an NFL player. Hopefully with even just the most basic of knowledge, you could find a better job”

It is amazing to me the number of folks that do not want to do this. I'm fine with basket weaving. But I'm clearly in the minority. Plus, as @beej67 can tell you, we evidently can't get approval for it from the BOR even if we want to do it.

My mama said I’m the most specialist athlete and everyone at high school agreed. I’m goin pro.

Didn't go to Tech but I would say don't underestimate the pervasiveness of math phobia, pussy math or otherwise.

Also, liberal arts schools have plenty of majors in which you can get a degree simply by getting a D in basic, core algebra.

So, yeah, I imagine it makes a difference in recruiting, but what are you gonna do?
