Can you fire a coach that is 8-4?

If we beat Duke and somehow beat UGA, we are 8-4 and go to a bowl.

I know 8-4 would be a far cry from what most expected out of this season but can we really fire a coach after an 8-4 campaign?

IMO --no.

Chan will keep his job with an 8-4 finish --particularly with an UGA win.

1) I would say at Tech, only in a few remote circumstances, and...
2) Not when one of the 8 includes UGA
3) Not after losing a 4-year QB starter
4) Not after losing arguably the best athlete to ever play football at Tech
5) Not when you start the season 3-3 and end it 5-1.

I'd love to see us finish 8-4. That said, I think the chances that happening are very slim.

I've said all along that if we win out he's not going anywhere. The key for him is beating ugag. May not be fair for it all to come down to one game, but he's put himself in this position by losing the last 5.

Posting the first losing ACC season in 15 some odd years, with an experienced team, would concern me. But a UGA win would probably get Chan one more year. Beating UNC and losing to UGA would certainly get Chan fired.

I said 8-4, with a win over UGA, would be my minimum for the year in beej67's preseason thread. But how was I to know that this would be the worst ND team to ever play? And I had already accepted a UVA loss in Charlottesville.

Has any team ever gone 6 years without beating UGA in an uninterrupted home-home series? Vandy probably, UK maybe.

No way. He goes 8-4 with a win over georgie and he stays. Still has a chance to get to 9 wins for the second year in a row with a bowl win.

If we win the next two games, DRad needs to come out and say that Chan will be our head coach next season. Our recruiting needs a definitive statement either way...

Might be a good idea to bump that thread sometime around now, and see what we said then.

beej67,
wishes he could find it

His contract is up in 2010? Right?

If he beats them both, I would tolerate his holding the position. If he wins the bowl game, I would accept it.

Where did all the UGA optimism come from all of a sudden :P

Good question. I'm more pessimistic than ever after this weekend. I can't wait to be there with my buddies cheering us on in another opportunity to beat them, but I just can't expect it to happen. I'm sure by kickoff I'll have myself convinced we can do it though. :laugher:

GT, Kentucky, Mississippi and Vanderbilt have lost at least six consecutive years in 'uninterrupted' home-home series. Auburn, Florida and South Carolina have also lost at least six.

Auburn- '23-'31 (most games played in Columbus, GA --not home-home)

Florida (Jax --not home-home)- '78-'83

GT- '91-'97, '78-'83
Kentucky- '97-'05, '78-'87, '66-'72

Mississippi- '97-'02, '77-'88

South Carolina- '66-'71 ('69-'70, back-to-back games in Athens --still 3-3 home-home split in the six years)

Vanderbilt- '95-'05, '74-'84

If Chan pulls of the miracle and beats UGA than it will be impossible to fire him, and it wouldn't be a good idea IMO with recruiting going well the past couple of years.

Maybe D-Rad would then step in and force him to give Bond complete control of the offense but let him stay on as HC, but we all know how that turned out last time...

There have been a few --the beforementioned programs + a few others:

Auburn- '23-'31 (most games played in Columbus, GA, not home-home)
Florida (Jax --not home-home)- '78-'83
GT- '91-'97, '73-'78
Kentucky- '97-'05, '78-'87, '66-'72
Mississippi- '97-'02, '77-'88
South Carolina- '66-'71 ('69-'70, back-to-back games in Athens, still 3-3 in the six years))
Vanderbilt- '95-'05, '74-'84

Man you are good. So, since 1990, no single coach has managed to survive losing to UGa six consecutive times?

Also Clemson, '65-'71.

We'll be 4-4 in the ACC if we beat UNC, which is still a "winning" season. I believe that's where Chan finished every other year except for last year.

As for Chan, I could see how some could say now that he should be fired even with a UGA win with the VPI loss still fresh. But it would be hard to fire a guy in the elation of a UGA win and probably a decent enough bowl bid.

I edited that post a bit: GT of course lost from '78-'83 (not '73-'78 --those years actually include 2 of the 11 wins vs. UGA in my lifetime! --73-78 actually represent the game #'s & I picked up those in my haste).

As far as coaches go:

GT: '78-'79 -Pepper, '80-'83 -Curry
GT: '91 -Ross, '92-'93 -Lewis, '94-'97 -O'Leary ('94 GO'L replaced BL for the last 3 games of the season).

KY: '97-'00 -Mumme, '01-'02 -Morriss, '03-'05 -Brooks

MS: '77 -Cooper, '78-'82 -Sloan, '83-'88 Brewer
MS: '97-'98 -Tuberville, '99-'02 -Cutcliffe

SC: '66-'71 -Dietzel

Vandy: '74 -Sloan, '75-'78 -Pancoast, '79-'84 -MacIntyre
Vandy: '95-'96 -Dowhower, '97-'01 -Widenhofer, '02-'05 -Johnson

So only three coaches have stuck around long enough to lose to UGA six consecutive times --and none since Brewer in '88.

If Tech beats UNC this weekend bet your arse Chan is back next season ---- EVEN if we lose to UGA AND lose in a bowl game.

Remember this simple formula:
7+6 = Chan 2008
