Can you fire a coach that is 8-4?

Well, Solich was 9-3 @ Nebraska, so you can fire a coach who goes 8-4. I will let Husker fans comment on how that worked out for them.

And San Diego went 14-2 and needed a change. Again, I'll let Charger fans say whether it was for better or worse.

I'd say those are good examples that you can't fire a coach who's 9-3, which is why the question was asked about 8-4 coaches instead.

In any case, it's a moot point for Tech fans generally, because if Chan manages 8-4 this year he's definitely staying.

Well, as long as we are throwing out names, both Georgia and Ohio State fired winning coaches who couldn't beat their main rivals.

I think those two teams have 4 or 5 conference championships since the replacements took over.

It comes down to risk. We know what we have in Chan. He will keep us above .500 and keep the bowl streak going. He will occasionally contend for the conference championship. He might even finish a season ranked in the top 25. Statistically, he has to beat UGa sometime. That is what Chan has shown us. Maybe flunkgate and probation have hurt us. But it hasn't been depth that has kept our offense in the lowest quartile for the past six years.

Do we know we aren't going to hire the next Bill Lewis? No. We might hire someone who will completely dismantle the program again. But we might hire a Jim Grobe (but not the Grobe). Or we might hire the next O'Leary.

I think our standards should be exactly what they were when we hired Chan.

ACC titles, beat UGa, finish in the top 25. Chan still has a chance to do two of those three this year.

Too little too late. Unless we dominate. Get dis straight.

Gailey whups the pups? He keeps his address. Ain't gonna happen. No match for the mutts. A huh..

Richt will wear the black to show you the mack and deliver the knack with Gailey on the skids, a huh..

Gailey ain't crazy but he sure is hazy/lazy and he can't keep up wid da kids..

Down on the Flats!

I wonder sometimes if gnats67 is really a spambot trying to get past the filters. I would probably argue with this post, if I had any idea what it said.

If Chan pulls of the miracle and beats UGA

Chan doesn't beat anyone. We may win in spite of him, and UGAy may throw the game away doing something boneheaded. We may come up with several spectacular defensive plays. All I'd give him credit for is recruiting decent enough defensive players to stay on the field with UGAs offense (which we have had in the past 2 years).

1. I think you are confused about the challenges of coaching at Georgia Tech, if you compare its situation with two giant state schools who have a large pool of recruits who would go there regardless of who is coaching there, and who have zero qualms about stiffing morality, NCAA regulations, the law, and the basic concept of higher education, as long as it would lead to a win on Saturday.

2. I think you are confused about the difference between goals and standards.

BS. If you're going to blame Gailey for the losses, you have to credit him for the wins. The program is his responsibility; wins and losses are, too.

1. A logical point. I must do further research on coaches let go after 8-4 regular seasons. But as you know, it is logic without meaning.

2. I am not convinced that CCG won't "retire" at the end of the year regardless of finish. There are many reasons to change football coaches, and whether or not a coach "deserves" it is fairly low on the totem pole when it comes to reasons.

Why thank you. Just saying, don't use a firing of a 9-3 or a 10-2 guy to support a statement that firing an 8-4 guy is a bad thing. Necessarily. And especially don't apply that data to a 7-6 guy. :)

Hell, if I were him, I'd retire for my health. Go coach the NFL where the fans are less critical. hehe

The AD who fired Solich just got canned, he had it in for him and wanted his own guy. Solich would have never been fired if it weren't for the AD. Wouldn't be surprised if they didn't bring him back. I'm just saying.

Just like the owner had it in for Marty.

We can trust John on his Husker insight. He has a nice source.

I'm worried that if we make a change we might get in a bidding war with NU over a different candidate.

Does Dan have it "in" for Chan? Dunno. Doubt it. But I can see him wanting his own guy in the slot... if he plans on staying.

1. I am well aware of the challenges faced by GT and the differences between us and UGA/OSU. Both of those schools were already achieving goals which we strive for before the coaching change. We don't need to be in the running for a national title every year like OSU. But our level of success has slipped since O'Leary (and especial the Fridge) left.

2. There is no confusion. It is our goal to beat UGA this year. The standard by which we measure that success is actually beating UGA.

Don't worry about it......you are about to go 0-2 the next 2 weeks, and there will be no worries about firing an 8-4 coach...because he will be 6-6 and in the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl game against Navy....which will probably result in yet another Tech loss.
