Can you fire a coach that is 8-4?

If Tech beats UNC this weekend bet your arse Chan is back next season ---- EVEN if we lose to UGA AND lose in a bowl game.

Remember this simple formula:
7+6 = Chan 2008

I've got booze riding on "nope."

If Chan goes 8-4, he isn't going anywhere.

Chan's win/loss versus our biggest rivals:

UGA 0-5
UM 3-1
AU 2-0
CU 4-2
FSU 0-1

That puts him at 9-9 against some pretty tough traditional southern competition. (He may be 0-2 against FSU, I just can't remember.)

Better question? What if we keep him and an NFL team comes calling right around signing day? What then? We are back to sqare 1. By the way 9-4 and I say he earns some more time.

That, my friends, is the BEST CASE SCENARIO!!!

The fans get what we want. Chan gets what he wants. And GT gets to keep the money we'd blow on Chan if we had to fire him. This is the most likely scenario....NOT!

I WISH the NFL picked him up this year... I just don't like his coaching style any way... That being said he beats UGA he's in still

He is 0-5 against our biggest rival. He beat a decent Miami team in 05 and very mediocre ones in 06 and 07.

If we beat Duke and somehow beat UGA, we are 8-4 and go to a bowl.

I know 8-4 would be a far cry from what most expected out of this season but can we really fire a coach after an 8-4 campaign?
In a word yes. Chan has used up all his mulligans. In any event, this will prove to be a moot point after UGA hangs about a 3 or 4 touchdown loss on us.

no.

But, every season the ax will be hanging by a thread. And every December Chan will be sitting by the phone.

Have the dolphins won one yet?

DUDE
Some of your stuff is off

He is
0-5 UGA
UM 3-1
CU 3-3 NOT 4-2. He lost two BADLY and one in a monsoon in 2002
FSU 0-2
AU isn't a regular opponent but I will give u the 2-0
How can u forget VT? They are easily as big as UM. His record 1-3

Vs our division
5-1 Duke
1-3 VT
3-1 Miami
UNC - 4-1
UVA - 2-4

Against our main rivals we play yearly:
7-12
Against our main rivals in general (includes FSU/AU):
9-14
Against our division:
15-10

Picture doesn't look as good as your painted it IMO. Take out duke and he is meerly 10-9 in division.

Add a 2-3 record in bowls
0-1 in ACC champ game....
thats 2-4 "big" or "extra" games

But I do agree with you ....if he wins out and beat's UGA...he isn't going anywhere.

When did Miami become one of our main rivals? I mean I understand it's a divisional game and all, but selecting them because we have a winning record and leaving out VT, who is also in our division, makes the original post pretty weak IMO.

Does it matter? When you're 19 it's all about the effect, not the taste. Didn't you post that you were in the 6th grade in 2000?
I'm just trying to gauge what kind of drinks GT fans are partial to!!:D

But I see your point about effect and taste. I guess after you're wasted you really don't take the time to determine if something really tastes good or not!

Any kind of booze in particular?

Whiskey shots, I believe, is what Kirbee and I settled on. The bet only takes effect, though, if he goes 7-6. (I think.. ..have to dig up the terms)

When I was 19 I drank Jim Beam. Now I wretch even thinking about it. Man, those were the days. I especially recall JTS's face turning from red to white to puke green in the span of about 40 seconds one night, at 5am in home park after we polished off a handle of Beam.

We have played Miami off and on for a long time, VPI matters little to me. I think the fan base cares less about the Virginia schools and it shows on the field. My rivals are UGA, AU, CU, FSU and Miami. (Please change the alignments to south and north.)

Sorry about being off on CU and FSU. I thought I might have been.

The point was just that he does have some nice wins against our long term rivals. (I should have included ND by the way, since we used to play them annually when I was there.)

GT and rivalries is a debatable topic --particularly with the SEC to ACC affiliations:

From the SEC years only UGA has carried over --although Auburn is still a potent rivalry --particularly with GT winning the last two meetings and Auburn choosing to opt out of the third game. It's a shame they don't meet up more often. With exception to three years, GT met Tennessee every year from '54-'87 --but it's been 20 years. Alabama is a similar situation --GT faced them almost annually for 50 years --but the last series between the two ran from '79-'84. Tulane is a former SEC foe whom Tech faced almost annually from the '40s to the early '80s.

In the ACC --although not in the Coastal-- I consider Clemson our biggest rival. This is based upon longevity --with exception to the late-'70s/early-'80s GT has faced them every year since the early '60's, longevity in the series itself as Clemson holds a 13-12 advantage since '83 --with 13 of 18 games decided by <TD, and proximity figures in as well. FSU was well on it's way to becoming a rivalry game --with five good games from '99-'03-- but division alognment has killed that.

The Coastal Division teams are/or will become rivals. UVA is certainly a rival to me --Miami is becoming one, VT is not yet, GT has faced UNC every year since joining the ACC (UNC leads 12-14-1) --but it doesn't feel like a rivalry. Duke for practical purposes should be a rivalry --GT has played them every year since '33, it's always been a home-n-home series, GT leads overall 44-30-1 --but with GT owning a recent 16 out of 18 edge and, well, Duke being Duke, it's not looked at as a rivalry.

My top five rivalries:

*UGA
*Clemson
*Auburn
*Virginia
*Miami

Well, Solich was 9-3 @ Nebraska, so you can fire a coach who goes 8-4. I will let Husker fans comment on how that worked out for them.

And San Diego went 14-2 and needed a change. Again, I'll let Charger fans say whether it was for better or worse.
