Dabo Swinney was named the interim head football coach in 2008. The Brent Venables hire, the best hire he ever made, happened in January 2012.

So it's not like Dabo hit it out of the park right off the bat, either. It took that drubbing in the bowl game to make him realize he needed better assistants.

And Clemson was a bit of a sinking ship when that hire happened. Certainly not in the same ballpark as we find ourselves currently but one thing I've learned in every aspect of life: money talks. Get the money to step up into the big leagues and pay big boy $$'s for coordinators and you can get big boy coordinators.

While not a surprise, Georgia Tech athletic director Todd Stansbury confirmed that coach Geoff Collins will return for a fourth season Wednesday night. Stansbury made the declaration on Collins’ radio show on The Fan.

Rules is a close friend of mine. If I owed him a bottle or if he owed me one I don’t see any chance of non-payment. Don’t take it personally but I don’t know you so I’m not going to take you on with the same bet.

Dabo was already winning before Venables, he just needed the extra push to permanently move beyond Clemsoning

Yep. And Dabo inherited a team with draft picks already on the team, including a few first rounders. Once Chan's recruits were gone, Johnson had what...2 or 3 draft picks who weren't punters or kickers? Gotsis, Stephen Hill and probably one other I'm forgetting? And of those, all were gone by the time Collins took over the program. In the 3 years since GC took over, how many of those Johnson players were drafted?

That pretty much lets you know the difference in the talent levels.

Collins may suck as a head coach but he's done two very valuable things for this program:
1 - recruited better talent
2 - proven that this bullshit narrative that has been propagated as long as I've been a Tech fan (since 1984 when I started there) was a lie. And that was that we can't recruit the same type of players as everyone else and keep them eligible.
 
As everything was beginning to change back in 2006, Geoff Collins was searching for an excuse to return to Georgia Tech, where he previously worked as tight ends coach under George O'Leary. Chan Gailey, who had taken over for O'Leary, was interested, but he didn't have a coaching position available, so he instead offered up the director of high school relations post.

Collins, who was coming off two years as a defensive coordinator at Western Carolina, saw it as a possible dead end and was hesitant -- he wanted a role that would give him flexibility. If he couldn't get back into coaching, he thought he might like to transition to an NFL front office. He had noticed how people at the pro level were being named director of player personnel, so he asked about creating that position instead.

Gailey didn't care about semantics.

"Call yourself whatever you want," he told Collins.
