Ok, so four 16 team conferences. The 4 champions play in a 4 team playoff. Let’s just do that.

That’s kind of how you’d do it. 4 conferences of 2 divisions each (8 divisions).

Each division plays in a conference championship game (effectively playoff round 1). Then matched conferences play (SEC vs ACC, B1G vs XII, which could rotate by year) to determine the National Championship game.

The downside is that there’s no reason to play G5 teams or FCS teams and non conference games effectively become exhibition games. That should encourage more big games to drive ticket sales without fear of a loss, though.
