Your original statement I took issue with was "...only receivers that return punts or kicks successfully get serious consideration..." and I later took issue when you called pure receivers "token candidates".
Larry Fitzgerald clearly refutes both of these statements. I cannot frankly comprehend classifying someone who finished #2 in a very close vote as "not a serious candidate" or "a token candidate". Apparently, you can although you have made no attempt to justify this position, unless you believe the only way to avoid these labels is to actually win the award.
Obviously it's very difficult for a WR to be considered for the award whether or not he returns kicks. Ismail and Tim Brown I don't believe would have been strong candidates without returns.
Desmond Howard, on the other hand, I personally think would have won the award without any kickoff returns. Most of his highlights for the year were receptions, and his most dramatic play of the year, the one that got him the most attention and probably the most votes, was an unbelievable catch and TD on a 4th down play. Furthermore, he played for a strong, high profile team, 19 of his 22 TDs were receiving, and he won the vote by an overwhelming margin. That he would have won it without returns is, of course, merely my opinion.
I agree with what PW said - it's an opinion poll. No one can predict precisely the whims of the voters. I think if a pure receiver excites them, they will vote for him, as they did for Larry Fitzgerald.
