Coaching Hire Grades - CBS

Don't know for sure, but I suspect it was the same reasons / justifications that Maryland used to can Fridge. Fridge went 9-4 at Maryland and ranked in then top 25 in 2010, and . . . they fired him. At MARYLAND! They decided to go with the Fool's Gold known as Randy Edsall. And promptly finished 2-10. Fridge won 8 or more games six times in ten years. In the 12 years since they fired him, they have never won 8 games even once. Finished in the top 25 four times in ten years . . . haven;t don it in 12 years since.

They fired Fridge (and I suspect Mangino) for the same reasons that certain "Tech fans" ööööing HATED the 3O even in 2014 when we won the Orange Bowl and finished 7th in the country.

For too many people (IMO) it is more important that you look pretty than that you actually be any good.

How was he a grade A prick? Any examples? He didn't kiss some boosters' asses. Does that make him a grade A prick? What else makes him a grade A prick? Did he make concussed players stand in a tool shed for hours at a time like the sainted Mike Leach? Was he perpetually drunk like Sarkisian? ööööing a subordinate, like Petrino? A public embarrassment like Orgeron? I just never heard much about him that way, other than the booster-thing.

On the field . . . whose expectations? Unrealistic boosters and fans? In the four years before Herman got there, Texas was 24-26. Since he left, they are 13-11. Sounds like they should be expecting about 6-7 wins a year. He went 32-18 in four years . . . 25-12 over his last three, and finished top 25 each year. He won four bowl games in four years. The records indicate that 8-9 wins a year is actually excellent for Texas. Sounds like the problem wasn't Herman - it was delusional "expectations."

And , , , lots of coaches "burn bridges" when they leave one school for another - especially an in-state rival. Ask the folks at Tennessee what they think about Kiffin. Ask OU what they think about Lincoln Riley (who IMO IS an arrogant prick).

However . . . I think the last sentence is spot-on.

I think Herman can coach. But Texas comes with big expectations. They are the preferred school in a big, football crazy state. They have an enormous budget. They are soon to be in the premier college football conference.

That being said, Texas just had their Michigan moment. Whereas UM opted to keep Harbaugh after several ho-hum seasons (probably due to finances), Texas canned Herman. Now UM is reaping the benefits of not following the current college football trend of coach shopping for the flavor of the month.

I think Herman does well for a few years, then lands at Ark or MSU. He could parlay that into a bigger job like LSU.

I would like to think your right, but I don't think the NCAA would touch Colorado because they want Prime Time to succeed.

NIL has taken the sting out of scholarships for the factories. Booster just plus up the cost. Still a good tool to blast smaller schools, though.

18. Sean Lewis, Kent State - C , Mixed but still there (24-31)
19. Chad Lunsford, Georgia Southern - C- , Fired (28-21)
20. Dana Dimel, UTEP - D , Bad but still there (17-40)
21. Herm Edwards, Arizona State - D- , Fired (26-20)

Some interesting notes from this:
1. Only 2 of the the top 10 rated hires are still coaching where they were hired. Chip Kelly and Jimbo.
2. 4 of these 21 coaches found "promotions". All had a hiring grade of B- or worse.
3. Only 6 of these 21 are still there. Of these 6 only 1 has a winning record- Jimbo.
4. 11 of the 21 were fired. 4 were promoted. 5 are still there with losing records. 1 is still there with a winning record.
One problem with coaching hires is that the expected result would likely be "FIRED" for every hire. Not many actually succeed to the level fans expect.

Yes, fans expectations, by the very nature of fanatics, are, on average, unreasonable bordering delusional. Personally, if I were in coaching and had aspirations as a head coach, I would target a program not known for success and perform a slow build. If you succeed, they will name the stadium after you. It all depends on what you would want of course, but leaving a legacy at a place would be a worthy pursuit in my eyes. Bill Snyder comes to mind.

Have it from good friends that are members of Austin Country Club that he was forced to leave the club due to his constant abusive behavior to members and staff. All UT coaches are given a membership to ACC and he was forced to leave within 6 months after joining. One guy that has worked there for over 40 said he was the worst person he had to deal with during his entire time there. If he's acting like that to members and staff of a club he has a free membership to then how does he act to others? People like that tend to carry that personality everywhere they go.

Guy got hired by FAU, not UF. That says something. It also says something when these clowns bash GA Tech for not hiring guys who got hired at Liberty and FAU, or stayed at Tulane, as opposed to a guy who worked for 20 years under George O'Leary and Nick Saban - two of the best coaches of our era.

ETA: And the FOTM chimes in again. LOL.
Hey, Kiffen parlayed the FAU job into a pretty nice gig.

That is an excellent explanation of facts of which I was not aware.

Thanks!

You realize that I was asking about Tom Herman, and you posted a link abour Mark Mangino, right?

I did not, that makes a lot more sense now. Agreed I've never heard anything about Tom Herman being a prick.

Hey man, being perpetually drunk ain’t a bad thing. Just saying…

He took the FAU job after Bama and then went from FAU to Ole Miss.
Still took the Bama job to resurrect his career, IMO. After fouling off both UT and USC, he needed some rehab. Got it at Bama and then went to FAU. The Ole Miss hire was as much based off his work at Bama, I’d wager.

Can't you just ööööing admit you were confused about the facts when you made that post?? Because it is obvious to everyone that you were.

if they do, the fan expectations change and then they dont

I wouldn't wager that. Kiffin did really well at FAU, inheriting a 3-9 team and reeling off two 10-win conference titles in three years. That's going to make you a hot coaching prospect regardless of where you were beforehand.
