Collins report card

Stole this format from @Jacketblind

Recruiting - A, we literally had one of the top 5 classes in GT history in season one and probably a top 10 this year. Not to mention the transfers
Juice/Hype - A, goes with out saying the GT brand has not been "cooler" in my lifetime. That includes the 1990 NC
Special teams - F, deserved
Offense - B-, Not sure if this is fair given what he had year one to work with or with a TF QB this season. I definitely see promise.
Defense- C, not sure why but both seasons we have been a much better second half D. Can't do much without a D-line, that is a GT issue.
Game management- D+, terrible here. Hopefully experience is all that is needed.
4 the culture - A+++, see "Juice/Hype"

The smart people might have known but I didn't. I really had no idea how big of a deal this was. When CPJ came in and took a roster of NFL system players and whooped UGa in Athens, I figured the transition was mental. The transition from 3O back to non-3O is something I was in no way prepared for. That is on me for not being more aware but I disclose that since I think there may be a lot of fans who are not cutting CGC enough slack because of that misconception. I pay attention to the posts of the more football savvy posters here and have recalibrated my expectations accordingly but I think there are a lot of fans who haven't which is creating extra friction.
You saw this exact thing happen at Ga Southern after they tried to switch away from the 3O. Other than recruiting, I'm not exactly sure how it sets programs back on the switch away from the option. I can't imagine Ga Southern had more issues recruiting, did they? Anyway, we knew then in 2008 that this was the history, and shouldn't be surprised when these results occur. I agree next year should be better, and I think it will, because we are already way better this year than last, despite what the record shows.

The only reasonable grade for Collins this year is . . .

INCOMPLETE.

For a half dozen reasons, including especially the Wuhan Chinese Flu. As someone else posted here, this WAS like an exhibition season. O$U playing five games. Arizona State playing three. Changing the rules as we went along. In his second year and the first with a large percentage of his own players . . .

Next year. Lord willing, next year we will have mostly or virtually completely conquered the Wuhan Chinese Flu. At that point, I'm hope that a lot of the $#!t I saw this year and am willing to give him a pass on for now, will be gone with the flu.

Recruiting-A(Sims and Gibbs enuff said)
Offense-B. As mentioned above. plus our OL performed better than expected. Kudos to Coach Keys for their performance this season.
Defense-F. Hate to have to give them a fail but stats don't lie. I did see some hope for the future but if we don't do a better job of teaching the basics of tackling and teaching DB's to turn and make plays on the ball we will never be a championship caliber team.
ST-F. Just one example of how bad we are here. We reach the opponents 29 yard line(99.9 pct of CFB teams would automatically send out their FG unit) and instead we send in our punter. No opposing coach in their right mind would send their return team in, So predictably we fake the punt and have our 270lb punter try to throw for a TD in the end zone. Big time fail.
Collins needs to show the most improvement year 2 to year 3 or the seat is going to really start warmimg up.

If I thought he wouldn’t taylor the offense to the talent on hand, I would say 4-6 wins over the first two years.

But it comes at a price. A bowl should be in the mix next year and a good bowl in year 4. Had he taylored the offense I would have said 4 years hovering around 5-6 wins and progress in years 5 and 6.

We need to add a Sims/Gibbs level talent at WR. Another ready to play OL. And we need some DL.

Hopefully, we have a normal year in 2021 and can pad the win column with some patsies. Getting to 4-4 in the woeful coastal should be on the table.
When is the next Notre Dame game? Is it next year

A. He has changed the perception of GT from dull and boring to exciting and edgy, from a team in decline to a team going places. He is almost done remaking the roster with player with the skill, size and speed to compete. As these recruits gain maturity, experience and physicality, GT will rise fast.

I like the cut of your Jib

Recruiting - B+ Recruiting has improved but the fact is we still aren't in the top 3rd of the ACC in recruiting, and recruiting is supposed to be the forte.
Offense - D+ The offense is not only boring, it seems to take half a season for the OC to determine what works. Seems like there is no ability to design an offense around the talent on the roster going into the season like Friedgen and Johnson did routinely.
Defense - C+ Missing some key pieces up front and the tackling could be improved; but I like the style.
Special Teams - F Worst special teams I have seen in the past 40 years. The transition from the triple option apparently directly impacts simply fielding a kick, never mind making a field goal. People who want to blame these woes on something other than coaching are retards.
Clock management - D Is it part of the growing pains? maybe.
404 the culture - A I'm not a big fan of money down and the ATL gear personally; but it has created a buzz and I see some other teams trying to copy parts of it. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

So overall the grade is something like a C or C+. It really doesn't matter, I've seen enough this season that I am optimistic about next season and I feel like this is the grade going into midterms, finals aren't until 2022 or 2023.

If he were to eventually win 7 or 8 games and have the turnaround in progress, would he stay with us? Big time programs are all looking for up and coming head coaching prospects when they have openings.

By the time he gets this turned around, he'll be in his mid-50's, is that still up and coming? Dabo is only 2 years older then Collins for perspective. Personally I think that is good for us because I think big programs will be looking for someone younger. If someone steals a 53-57 year old Collins from us it will probably mean he won a national championship (Jimbo Fisher). I think it is more likely we keep Collins for about a decade post turn around.

I wanted to bring some stats to the table, especially in judging the offensive and defensive units. I used Football Outsiders’ FEI ratings, which are (IMO) the best I’ve been able to find. I’ve included the national ranking of each unit below.

Defense: D-
2019: 96
2020: 73
CPJ fired 3 different DCs for putting up results like this. Actually, this is slightly worse. Only reason it isn’t an F is because we are still significantly lacking talent, but you’d like to at least see improvement from previous years that we all acknowledged as bad.

Offense: D+
2019: 100
2020: 78
We went from being the best non-Clemson offense in the ACC to a joke. Last year was an F-, but we did improve significantly this year, even with freshman in key roles. I’m a bit more optimistic here.

Special Teams: F
Do I really need to elaborate?

Game Management: D
Wasted timeouts, penalties by unprepared players, bad situational play calls - he looks like an unseasoned coach here, but that’s not unexpected because he still is.

Everything Else: A-
Culture, recruiting, branding, fan outreach - all markedly improved. I’ll give CGC full credit, because he made an effort here and I do think it will cause the above grades to improve.

Going forward, I’m interested to see if we make any coaching changes. Other than RB and OL, I’m not convinced that any position group is playing particularly well, nor am I sold on either coordinator.

C- sounds about right. Disappointed that the team plays sloppy with too many missed tackles/assignments and too many penalties. That's coaching.
You don't think SOME of it is freshmen making bonehead freshmen mistakes?

It’s interesting how a lot of people recognize the bad a lot quicker than the good. Most here gave ST an F. FG kicking post Butker has been an F. Punting is part of ST too. Pressley Harvin has been All American caliber and the gunners have been excellent. We’ve done a lot more punting than placekicking and not one person mentioned it.

Offense a D? A joke? You're a Johnson fanboy, huh?
