Color Crisis

I realize that, but it was NEVER considered a primary color. We were FORCED to choose a dark color for jerseys in the 1980s because of a stupid change of rules by the NCAA that said the home team had to wear dark jerseys at home, whereas Tech had been wearing white jerseys at home for at least 40 years, because the opponents were more than willing to wear their own dark jerseys. For unknown reasons Tech chose to wear blue jerseys rather than the more appropriate gold jerseys. Even then, though, blue was considered a tertiary color, with white and gold being primary colors with no secondary color indicated. TStan decided, based on some obscure article in the Tech newspaper from the early 1900s that blue had always been a Tech color. The problem is that if anybody bothered to read that article, it was a fraternity who used blue for some kind of event, and not a school-wide choice. And so he lied and elevated the tertiary blue (black was also a tertiary color) to secondary status. I don't remember anybody elevating it to primary status, which is what that link posted earlier indicated. Even though uniforms prior to the 40s or mid 30s were neither white, gold, nor blue, Tech has always been the White and Gold, as indicated in both our fight songs. I hated the blue jerseys in the 80s and early 90s, and I still hate them, and I hate blue pants or all blue even more.

I’m confused by what you are saying. You seem to be saying that TStan was responsible for using blue even though you say that it was the NCAA that forced the issue.

Anyone can go back and see that blue has indeed been a secondary or accent color for since at least the 60s or 70s. No primary jersey colors, sure, but we’ve worn black jerseys in the past and certainly the blue has become a regular option as well.

Beyond all that, I just don’t get why people get so spun up over uniforms.

The NCAA forced all colleges to wear dark jerseys at home and light jerseys for away games. For reasons unknown to me, Tech under Homer Rice chose blue for those dark jerseys, even though the more natural choices would have been gold . . . or black, because of the Black Watch. There was considerable criticism then about the choice of blue; nobody understood why it was chosen. The NCAA has since dropped that ridiculous rule, and blue did not make a return, at least for the football team, until TStan pulled up that early 1900s article that he lied about. Dodd NEVER wore dark jerseys of any color for home games. He wore blue jerseys (again no idea why blue) for a few away games, most notably in 1942, filling in for an ailing Alexander, when he took an undefeated Tech team into Athens wearing blue jerseys and got slaughtered. That alone IMO should have been reason enough never to wear blue again, but we did. We certainly never wore solid blue uniforms until Johnson's last team wore them in Detroit for that bowl game. I don't know if CPJ chose them or Tstan chose them, but they were hideous. Later incarnations of that uniform don't look any better, and IMO blue pants look awful too. GOL had the right idea by alternating white jerseys with gold pants and gold jerseys with white pants. Both of those uniforms looked awesome, as one other poster has alluded to.

As far as getting "spun up" over uniforms, when those outside the Tech community see a Tech team take the field, historically, they have seen white and gold. Whether TStan, the clown, or anybody else wants to admit it or not, White and Gold is our brand, and we should stick to it. Marilyn Monroe famously posed for the cover of a Look magazine in 1952 wearing a white sweater with a gold T on it. The photo was also used in the 1953 Blueprint. She also visited the Tech campus and gave an autographed copy of the photo to Dodd.As I said, White and Gold is the Tech brand . . . not blue and anything.

You do realize that Marilyn Monroe died over 60 years ago. Damn how old are you?

Also that looks like a white sweater with a gray T.

Everyone keeps referring to the design as “honeycomb”, but it actually did look like a yellow jacket nest. And was actually a sharp design. The players liked it at the time.

Blue was on a ring way back in the 20’s or 30’s. I’ll have to find the historical society write up on it. It has a history, maybe not a huge history, but it’s there.

I have a blue stone in my ring too, but the metal is white gold. That combination was used almost everywhere, because it looked good. It has nothing to do with school colors though.

I’ll keep looking. Until then, why does this site say navy blue is part of our history.

your anti blue rants are legendary on the other sites. Nobody changing your mind. Happy to change mine.

Thanks for posting that link. It includes the fake article TStan used to justify blue for a secondary (apparently now a primary) school color. The article CLEARLY says "Class colors", NOT "School colors"
