Thanks for stepping up and throwing it out there beej --because that was my thought, my dad's thought, and a couple of guys sitting around us thought. And CPJ is a good football coach, the 'Chessmaster' was a better one today.
And I'm not saying he is a bad coach. Not in the least.
Our offensive game plan was good, until Virginia made an adjustment. Their adjustment was to push their LBs outside, and give us 3 on 3 in the interior, knowing that they could beat the blocks of our suck-ass interior linemen. Then the read forced Nesbitt to hand to Dwyer, and Dwyer couldn't get anything done. They preyed on an interior blocking mismatch, and forced our bread-and-butter play to go where they wanted it to.
Our only option at that point was to pass, which PJ tried quite a bit in the second half, but Nesbitt is a sub-50% passer who takes bad sacks and makes poor decisions with the ball, who also has fumbilitis.
...which, we as Tech fans should be pretty darn familiar with at this point. Nesbitt is the New Reggie. He's a fierce competitor that makes poor decisions under pressure. Recall Chan used to say that Reggie was very composed during the game too.
So it turns out that VT's approach to stopping the offense (crash Dwyer) wasn't the best one. The best one was UVA's version. I imagine we'll see that blueprint for the remainder of the season. Nesbitt has exactly 5 days to learn how to pass before FSU comes to town.
Back to the point, Virginia adjusted, and adjusted in such a way that we don't have the personnel to adjust back. Namely, we don't have a quarterback. Check and Mate.
Oh, and then there's the defensive side of the ball, where we never adjusted, ever, the entire game.
