Cpj on fake punt, "My bad fam"

This is an indictment on the coaching staff. That we have to play PERFECT to beat pitt ??

With the talent we currently have, you argue that we don't need to be almost perfect? We need to be a lot closer to perfect than what we saw today and that is for sure. And no, this isn't a defense of the coaching staff.

It's ööööing Pitt, man. One play shouldn't matter.

1 play turns into multiple plays and impact the outcome of the game. A few wtf plays 2 weeks. At least last week I felt that we simply beat ourselves, but this week we looked completely unprepared, lethargic, and downright pitiful again on special teams.

The fake punt, and the attempted 52 yard FG? Did King whisper in coaches ear that he could make it? Did someone open a door as soon as it left his foot?

Had you watched the game you would know it was far more than one play. It was the pass to Stewart, it was poor tackling, it was some really bad pitches by they QB, it was missed blocks, it was a freaking laundry list. If Nick Saban's third team played that poorly he would have a coronary on the sideline; but it was our starters.

CPJ has had some very good moments here, along with some very bad.

However, it seems like he really enjoys the good moments because it is his opportunity to let folks know of his brilliance.

But when things go south (and he is very close to having under 50% success vs P5 opponents ) he gives a screw you, IIWII attitude. As if, how dare you question me.

For his own sake, I think he would be more successful, happy and fulfilled at a N.E. Montana State @ Happy Gulch type school. A place where HE is the show. No competition. And nobody questioning his brilliance.

Lol, "It was a bad call." "It was somebody else's idea." "The player didn't even do it right, or it would have worked." "But it's on me."

Why not just quote what he really said? What he said is right there in the article.

That was a bad call. I’ll eat that one. That was on me. Our (assistant coach) who had the punt team thought it was there. He thought it was going to be easy, and I’m not sure it wouldn’t have been easy if the guy who caught the damn thing (defensive end Antwan Owens) would have run outside where he was supposed to. But that was a bad call. That’s on me.”

Honest question - what do you want him to say about us not being able to complete an 8 yard stop route to an open receiver? That's pretty clearly the player's fault, and ultimately CPJ's fault (as everything is). And that is what he said. People want honest answers about what happened and that is exactly what he gives.

And to be perfectly honest, I don't want him to say anything. I want him to shut the öööö up and win.

Really?? Because here is his opening statement.

“Just frustrated and disappointed. We came out to start the game on offense and we looked like we’d never played before. I don’t know what else to say. Frustrated. We’ve got to do a better job coaching and a better job playing.”

That doesn't sound anything like your characterization.

Fake punt, bad pass on 4th, dropped pass by Camp/Stewart... it's all the same. The player ööööed up a play that they should have pretty easily made, which ultimately reflects coaching when it becomes a trend.

Then why are we in this thread bitching about his press conference instead of his failure to prepare and coach his team today?

It never does. Paul Johnson can literally say "it's totally my fault" multiple times and people will still call him arrogant and accuse him of taking no responsibility. öööö like that makes me want to keep defending him even though it's starting to look like he's lost the team.
Dude he takes responsibility to sound good and it starts to gnaw at him and kill him and he decompensates and throws the assistants and players under the bus. Every. Single. Time. I’ve been a Paul defender til last week. Last week broke it for me. He can’t win me back. Arrogance is funny when you’re saban and winning.

Did... did we not cover the other aspects of his failure today elsewhere already? That would honestly surprise me.

I get your point but a few counter points:
1 . If you're faking a punt inside your own 35 yard line that early in the game, it reeks of desperation. Even if you think you are really, really certain it's going to work, the risk is so high that your very successful programs aren't going to run that. The fact that he thought they needed to run it says how he feels about the desperation of the team.
2. Read Paul's comments. He takes responsibility in the first part of the comment and the last part (That's on me). That's all he had to say. He didn't have to throw in that the assistant coach thought it would be there (ie...let's blame him for suggesting it). And then he goes on to say "I'm not sure it wouldn't have been easy if the guy who caught the damn thing ran where he was supposed to go." Why did he have to throw those 2 under the bus? And it's not like it's something he rarely does. He did this last week and does it pretty much seemingly every time something goes wrong. Just say "It was a stupid call. My bad."

*slap slap slap slap slap* there you go again. He never says "It's totally my fault" because that statement ends after the word fault if he actually meant it. Instead, Paul has to add in that so and so coach thought it was a good idea, and oh yea if the player had just done what he was supposed to, then it would have worked. That is the exact opposite of taking responsibility.
