Cpj on fake punt, "My bad fam"

I had no issues with PJs comments today. My problem is this isn’t the first time we’ve seen TM struggle passing yet he’s still pulling the trigger each week. I really like TM and I think he represents the school well, but he isn’t a QB at this level. That’s not to be a knock on him as he’s certainly talented he’s just not a QB. He needs to be an AB. The fact that he’s apparently the best option we have is completely on PJ and his staff. There is no way TM is throwing the ball consistently well in practice and just not translating it on Saturdays. This team is lacking difference makers/play makers which is why everything has to be perfect because there isn’t anyone who can bail us out with big plays like we’ve had with past teams.

It never does. Paul Johnson can literally say "it's totally my fault" multiple times and people will still call him arrogant and accuse him of taking no responsibility. öööö like that makes me want to keep defending him even though it's starting to look like he's lost the team.

I think it swings both ways, I wonder if CPJ has confidence in his team. I don't think we gave up today, what explains the second half?

I doubt many predicted we would be 1-2 heading into Clemson. It will take another couple of weeks to see if he has lost the team or not.

CPJ is by nature blunt in most every part of his career and maybe personal life BUT there are some areas he cannot be. It kills him he cannot but as he is showing signs of cracking he will either be more explosive and cranky or fade out. I believe the laws of nature have made him tired and that shows with his ill prepared teams. He likes golf and his residential retreat and he has all the money he ever dreamed of. He cannot improvise a win anymore. Times have changed. He knows that his players are not the same caliber as 4 and 5 stars but he cannot say that so he dances between accountability and blame. He knows the Hill has his hands tied. He hates recruiting and sucking up to youngsters and their parents but he cannot say it. He hates the media but has less issue admitting it. He is not a GT ambassador. He hates that role also. I am not a Dr but I play one on TV and my hunch is his pride will send him packing

I agree with this completely. At this point in CPJ's tenure our lesser QB's should be Tevin Washington types who may not be the best athletes; but can run all aspects of the offense well and manage the game. Likewise we should always have a Days type B-back, a big body to just pound inside. Right now in short and goal situations we don't have good short yardage guy. We have other issues; but those are glaring and they go straight to CPJ.

Really?? Because here is his opening statement.

That doesn't sound anything like your characterization.

Perhaps today, in that one instance.

If you have not seen the smarmy side, you have not been watching.

The post-loss pressers are broken records at this point. He says it's his responsibility, he says players have to make plays, he says we stopped ourselves, etc.

It's his job to help the players make plays. When things fall apart like this, I want to know what he's going to do differently. I don't get a sense that there's much he thinks he can do.

And that ultimately is what gets you fired. Lack of forward progress, and being powerless to make it happen.

The problem is when he says "it's totally my fault" it sounds totally insincere... because he offers no comment on what he's going to do differently to change it. He just says "we have to coach them better." If he really thinks *he's* done wrong, then tell us what it is, and what you're going to do to fix it.

For example, for all the stupid posters on here talking about how CPJ is too lazy/stubborn to fix special teams, it's been a frustration and point of emphasis for him for years now. He's talked about it incessantly, he's tried special teams coordinators, he's taken over it himself, everything. And yet we still have real problems.

That's why CPJ is losing me... it seems like he's all out of ideas for how to fix the problems that have now become persistent across seasons.

No Joe's to fix the woes, iiwii.

Do you think Willie Taggart uses that excuse? Recruiting differential certainly doesn't explain the two losses this season at all.

Willie Taggart is a öööö, Paul Johnson is a mother ööööer, but not in a good way.

edit: in all seriousness I'm just pissed and have no idea how to fix this.

Even if you're reasonably confident the play is going to work, it carries some significant level of risk. You're snapping it to a guy who's never taken a snap, and who's never run with the ball in a game. So there is certainly a chance something is going to go wrong.

And if you convert it, you're still 65 yards from the end zone, and you may be punting again 4 plays later. And it's the 1st quarter.

It was a god-awful decision and he should just say the öööö so in the press conference.

I represented Tech well, really well. But Chan never let me throw a single damn pass for the football team.

Maybe not overall recruiting differential; but it is clear that CPJ can not consistently recruit and/or teach a qb and other key positions. Marshall is a good athlete, who passes about like Reggie Ball, and can't make the reads to run this offense; that is on CPJ not Marshall. Marshall should be at a-back. We should have a better back up qb than Marshall in year 10 of Johnson, and an even better starter. We should have a B-back who can consistently run through arm tackles. Mason had 10 carries for 94 yards, he can run the ball and looked good today, he has talent; but Mason isn't a guy you give the ball to on goal to go inside the 5 to pound it in. Do we need to even talk about defensive line? We seem to have maybe 1 guy on DL. Place kicker? This is year 10 and we have glaring gaps in talent all over the place, and it looks more like recruiting than anything else to me.

I think this board is way too quick to invoke the specter of deficient "talent" – that mysterious quality that guarantees success in life – when we don't know what's going wrong. Whatever the "ceiling" of our players is (whether it's theoretically as high as FSU's players, for example) has little to do with our inability to beat Pitt.

Obvs its still all CPJ's fault. But players going to the wrong places, blocking the wrong people, not making catches when wide-open, etc., has nothing to with failure to recruit sufficiently talented players. It has everything to do with attitude, focus, motivation, repetition, etc. I think CPJ can call the right plays, can identify the on-field mismatches, just as good as ever. But obvs something's broken in other aspects of his job. And he doesn't seem to know where the rot is coming from or how to stop it.

I don't disagree with that; but I think this year we are missing key pieces in too many places and it amplifies what you are saying. Overall talent level isn't necessarily that bad; but talent level at specific positions is, if you understand what I'm saying. I do not buy the argument that we have players that belong at the FCS level.

From the stands it is hard to tell the difference between "taking off a play and getting beaten out" (ie, a motivation problem) and "fighting like hell and getting beaten out" (ie, a talent problem) and "fighting like hell but going to the wrong spot" (ie, an execution problem). If our problem was of the second variety, we'd have a lot less success than we (even still) occasionally have. I mean, there were plenty of plays where we looked pretty good yesterday. Not enough to win the game, but enough to demonstrate the problem is not simply Pitt out-manning us.
