CPJ on quarterback options (pardon pun)

It seems that this option is in the back of CPJ's mind. I have all the confidence in the world in Paul Johnson. He's been there and done that...and more! Double B mentioned this as a possibilty in another post, recently.

Johnson mentioned that there are still other options on the roster, like safety/linebacker Cooper Taylor, safety Dominique Reese and wide receiver Quentin Sims, all of whom played quarterback in high school.

CPJ has mentioned he likes to recruit players who have played QB, because they're usually the best talent on a high school team. I forgot how many of these guys actually played QB in high school.

But I think we need Cooper Taylor and Dominique Reese at their respective positions much more than at QB. Our backups should be just fine. If we have to move Coop or Reese, we have some SERIOUS problems.

Also, let's think positive ... you know The Secret: Law of Attraction. If you think positive, then positive things happen. TIC

This seems to be a bit counter productive though. The concern is that we have an untested 2nd string QB and a true freshman 3rd string QB that is learning an offense with a very steep learning curve.

How does considering non-QB players as a QB help the situation if they also need to learn from scratch? I would think that if we were in such a precarious situation, we would be better off with either David or Jordan under center regardless of how inexperienced they are.

I think we need to work some A-backs as QB's. We are deep there, and they all make the same pre-snap reads and know the plays.

I couldn't agree more.

I don't want any of these guys playing QB, either. I think any team who has to start a 3rd or more string QB is in serious trouble. We still have our 1st string guy. So not a big deal. Also, I don't think CPJ is making a move for Taylor, Sims, or Reese to play QB. This is a last resort. It would be like putting Jose Canseco in as a reliever, nevermind.

I don't mind if Cooper Taylor plays some QB, as long as it's in the 4th quarter when we're cruising along. Other than that, I'd like to see Josh take every meaningful snap we have.

True, but moving a certain tight end to QB turned out well for one game, at least.

I seriuosly doubt it will ever get to the point of using defensive players, but it's not the end of the world if it does happen. I believe Ken Whisenhunt unexpectedly played some QB for Tech and did fairly well.

Wow Cooper Taylor at QB!

Just think about that!

1) Fastest man on the team
2) One of the strongest
3) Iron Man winner for offseason work outs
4) Smart
5) Legacy Georgia Tech player son of Jim Bob Taylor former Tech QB
6) We have plenty of other options to play wolf and safety
7) Has already shown he is a baller

This could really be a good back up plan if we need to do it.

Go Jackets!

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the discussion about using non-QB's was related to the possibility that we would get far enough down the depth chart to need a #4 or #5. Seems very unlikely, but you still have to think about it. Right now we have 2 QB's out (Jaybo and Jordan) and the season hasn't even started. You wouldn't want to wait until the middle of a game and suddenly have to decide what to do because Sims gets hurt.

I said this before in terms of redshirting and it also applies to

this discussion.

If you are a smart coach you will play the guys who give you the best chance to win the next game. It shouldn't matter if they are freshmen right off the farm or fifth year seniors. It shouldn't matter if you have a "wolf" playing QB or a QB playing DE. All that should matter is that you have the guys on the field who are available to you that give you the best chance to win the next game.

I like CPJ's attitude - words to the effect that Hey, we've got a roster full of FOOTBALL players. We can shuffle 'em around as need be to field a competitive team.

I understand that its not practical but I love the attitude nonetheless.

You guys just don't know what you're talking about. You do what you have to do.

I can recall the B'More Colts back in the day when they were either NFL champs or contender when they had Johnny Unitas, the legend, at QB. Unitas went down with a knee during the stretch of one season (67-68, I guess, I can't really remember the dates but I do remember the games) and then his backup, I guess it was Morrall, went down and they didn't have another QB. Their HB Tom Matte who'd played QB at Ohio State (I think) was pressed into service for the last few games of the season.. Damn near won a championship. One of the gutsiest things I've ever seen.

Lesson is never discount what can be done. Having all these guys, heck half the team could probably learn to play a decent QB if they had to and they had CPJ up their ass.

Unitas backup in 1965 was Gary Cuozzo. Unitas got hurt and Cuozzo got hurt. The Colts signed QB Ed Brown who guided the Bears to the NFL title game in 1956,He got hurt and Tom Matte was forced to be QB.

Maybe not end of the world, but certainly end of the season. Do any other fanbases talk about their 7th option at QB? All of this backup QB talk has been pretty hilarious. If we lose 5-6 QBs, any ACC title talk is over. Period. Not much point in even discussing it.

Using Coop as an emergency #3 sounds like an okay idea to me.

Coop ran this offense in high school. He could probably run it better than some of the current backups, but he is just too talented on the defensive side of the ball for them to switch him back. If he came in as an emergency QB, I would feel confident that he could make some things happen.
