CPJ's first dumb call

Ummm...
That play that worked was a great call. I loved it!
That play that didn't work was a horrible call. I hated it!

Sorry guys, I think it was a great call! NOBODY thought this was going to happen, and had it worked this thread would have never been made.

I agree, it was a great call.

What I don't agree with here is I called it as a fake onsides, just something deep in my gut told me it was gonna be one... :D

I thought it was a bad call because we had shut down Miami at that point it the game, 10-0. I'm all for going balls deep when the time calls, but at that point in the game, I didn't like the call.

Maybe in your opinion. A call going good doesn't make it a good one. If you go for 4th and 50 from your own 1 when you are up by 3 and happen to make it....is it a good call?
Well this whole thing is opinions right? You're trying to tell me why you know better than the man who is #3 on the win list at this stage of his career. Guess who I think is right?

There have been 234,721 onside kicks in the first half of football games in the history of college football.
  • For the 45,289 that worked - the coach and staff and players were all acclaimed geniuses, great football strategists, gutsy and sure of themselves.
  • For the 189,432 that didn't work - the coach and staff and players were all acclaimed idiots, with no game-plan and desperate to make something happen when it wasn't necessary.
Georgia Tech's onside kick was #189,432 - in case you haven't figured this out yet......

You're drinking the kool aid now my friend.

Had Chan done this, he would be hanging from the rafters.

CPJ said that a certain Miami player would always leave early, thus making them susceptible to a surprise onside kick / pooch kick. In fact that same player DID leave early on our kick, we just didn't execute properly.

CPJ saw something on film and tried to exploit it, can't fault the guy for that.

Most of you are missing the point. PJ saw something on film that said he could make that call because their kick off team was leaving early. So if you see that in film, and decide you are going to do a surprise onside kick to take advantage of the other team, then the question is:

When is the appropriate time to make that call? Up 10-0 early in the game seems like a great time to make that call. Why? You have the momentum and want to go for the jugular early. If they recover and score because of it, there's still plenty of time to gain the momentum back and your still ahead in the score. Perfect time to make that call. There is not a better time to make that call.

In the very least it showed our coach has the balls it takes to win at the college level.

If that play worked, most of you detractors would be saying the exact opposite thing and calling PJ a genius.

I hate when people say that. had it worked it still woulda been bad

Tell me why? If you are going to make that call, when is the time to make it? Are you saying that call should NEVER be made, or is there a better time to make that call? Which is it and please give us some examples. I doubt you can make an arguement that there is a better time to make that call. I'm eagerly awaiting your answer.

The problem BOR is that many of our fans are so conditioned to worrying about what might go wrong that they aren't willing to take risks that can lead to big wins. PJ isn't afraid to compete. He's a lot like Dodd, in that he expects good things to happen.

I don't like onside kicks.

Ever.

it was a bad call b/c it sends a message to the team you need a gimmick up 10-0

This was the same thing Ugag did against UF and caused them to be down 14-3.

The passing at the beginning was a GREAT CALL and gave us some big time MO. But once we got up 10-0 I think PJ could have just let our D and O play straight up. IMO

With all the 4th down attempts we really don't need to add more gimmicks IMO

Ok, so now we're comparing being up 10-0 to try an onside kick versus being down 7-3. Genius. And I don't understand how this is a gimmick? I understand a gimmick play, like the fumblerooskie or statue of liberty. But how is scouting that a Miami kick return team is leaving early, and trying an onside to take advantage of that, gimmicky?
