Curious, what to expect from defense?

I heard we're gonna run a 4-0-7
Hope we’re not gonna run the same 8 something defense as Thacker ran. 8 guys running themselves out of position or getting whipped head to head, 3 guys taking the play off every snap because they’re gassed running back and forth to the sideline every play.

Unfortunately, you’t can fix our linebacker problem overnight. We need to get some good transfers next year or hope someone steps up.

I don't think LBs are the only problem. Our safeties have regressed this year, after Brooks and CPL were good to very good last year, and our corners just aren't ... good. Plus, for some reason, we'll have a DE cover a back on a wheel route and that never ends well.

Sometimes they don’t throw it that way.
Well, if I see a DE covering my running back on a wheel route, that's the first place I'm throwing it.
I can recall that happening three times last year - with Keion White in coverage (really? our best rush guy, covering a f'in wheel route? WTF?) and at least two went for long TDs and the other went for a long gain, about 50 yards, IIRC.
Good teams will have that scouted and be looking for that.

I'd at least like to see our DBs play straight up man and let the safeties back them up in 'center field'...no cloud zone coverage which obviously was confusing our guys. There were so many busted coverages in the middle of the field and slant routes over the middle. I mean if we get beat in man coverage then so be it. It's better than letting them run uncovered. The one TD by the BG WR where he made a CJ-esque one handed catch, you couldn't do anything about that. It was decent coverage and a great play by him.

LBs getting sucked into the first level and vacating their areas. It wasn't good. Play 4-3 in most alignments to get an extra hat but go to a 5 DB set when you have 4-5 wide outs. We just don't have that blazing fast hybrid player who can play both LB and DB like Charlie Thomas could. I've not been impressed with Muola. I think our 2nd LB personnel group has been more effective (Efford/Oliver) especially in running situations.

SIMPLIFY!!!

From all the times I heard that said, this thing runs a more complex defense by not.

Oliver's tackling, or attempts at it last week, were really bad.

Yeah ... I ain't that optimistic.
Van Dyke and his receivers > BGSU skill players.

I'm not optimistic, but I feel like Wake and Louisville skill players > Bowling green skill players, and we looked a lot better against both of those teams (even if we lost to the latter).

Hell, we looked better against Ole Miss than we did Bowling Green.

They were all bad last Saturday...even Kennard had the RB wrapped up several times and they looked like greased pigs as they ran away from our D.

Not in the last eight minutes.

At this point, we need to simplify the defense as much as possible and remove the "overthinking" aspect for the players and let them play fast, hard and use their instincts. Sometimes, simplicity like that is the best anecdote to what we're seeing.

See ball, run to ball, get ball.
