Curious, what to expect from defense?

At this point, we need to simplify the defense as much as possible and remove the "overthinking" aspect for the players and let them play fast, hard and use their instincts. Sometimes, simplicity like that is the best anecdote to what we're seeing.

See ball, run to ball, get ball.
We simplified on defense every single year under CPJ and we still sucked at defense. Not a solution.

Not sure there is anything left to 'simplify' with the tackling.

I expect the same order of ineptitude. What I do not understand is players NOT knowing how to tackle...it's a fairly instinctive skill is it not? How hard is to wrap up?
The only question about Saturday's game is whether our O can match Miami score for score.

We couldn't match BC at home so......

I think he is celebrating in the OU locker room right at this minute. He is their DC.
Id have to go back and look at his record when he actually had a decent defense, which I'm not going to do, but I could imagine that Roof could be a good DC if he was under a defensive minded head coach, like Venables, that was putting in the schemes and Roof just implemented his vision.

We can just say he was inexperienced under O'Leary, or maybe George gave him too much freedom.

Well, if I see a DE covering my running back on a wheel route, that's the first place I'm throwing it.
I can recall that happening three times last year - with Keion White in coverage (really? our best rush guy, covering a f'in wheel route? WTF?) and at least two went for long TDs and the other went for a long gain, about 50 yards, IIRC.
Good teams will have that scouted and be looking for that.
DE often cover a backside zone. Especially on a LB blitz.

Here's a link to his Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Roof

He has had some surprisingly good stats at his various DC jobs. I wonder if it was with the previous coaches players? Perhaps CTR doesn't have a great eye for defensive talent?

Ted Roof (GT DC 1999-2001)
1999 = 30.1 ppg
2000 = 19.8 ppg
2001 = 21.6 ppg

Ted Roof (GT DC 2013-2017)
2013 = 22.8 ppg
2014 = 25.6 ppg
2015 = 25.4 ppg
2016 = 24.5 ppg
2017 = 25.5 ppg

1999 was bad. But a 20 ppg average in 2000/1 is probably equivalent to a 25 ppg average by 2015. The spread offense was pretty young in 2000. And a all the time hurryup was unheard of.

How you gonna put together the worst defense of all time during Joe Ham’s senior season? SMH

Becomes a problem when you don’t have safety help.

Becomes more of a problem when you run the same defense so many times that the opposing OC strategically runs plays that move your safety off that side of the field.

Even more of a problem when your DC continues to make the same mistake after getting burned 1, 2, 3 times

Less of a problem when you hire a new DC.
