David Sims...

I found this post on the free board at Rivals. The poster claims to be one of Sims' coaches. The playoff stats he gives are accurate, so it seems likely the season stats would be as well. Take it with a grain of salt, but if true, :wow:.

"David sims will be in ATL tommrow night for the game. I coach him and would pass along some info. He has been a priority for techs staff from day one. He is what T. Pryor was to Ohio st for their offense. I think from day 1 he will at the very least challang for #2 qb spot. He is a finalist for mr football which is a great honor. Season stats 2100 yds passing 35 tds 1500 yds rushing 26 tds. Last week in first round playoffs he passed 235 yds 4 tds rushed 251 yds 4 tds @ a int in 3 quarters. He is special and built for coach johnson perfect option. He told David he really think he could be a heisman canidate if he came there. He is a good kid and student of the game".

2100 thru the air and 1500 on the ground is a lot of offense for one guy.

plus...he is a good student that is already enrolled in college courses. Unfortunately his high school lacks a process that allows kids to graduate early...so he cannot come in until fall...even though academically capable.

I've seen a few videos of David's and was wondering if anyone had any more information on his passing ability. He seems to be an incredible athlete and is a very fluid runner. Out of High School he lined up in the shot gun and ran a lot of read options and no back sets with designed QB runs. He was very successful doing this and could be exceptional running the option portion of the offense. However, I was wondering if his passing ability is in question?

you're crazy.
Seen any film on Tevin Washington?

Tevin could be the next Nesbitt just as easily as Sims. as could Jordan. We will have 3 solid, viable options at QB next year who will have had spring drills to practice, unlike 2008, and Sims will come in to the program having only had fall practice, coming from a high school team that runs shotgun.

Sims will not be any where near ready enough to play QB his true freshman year compared to Tevin, Jaybo, and Nesbitt, and we only need 3 deep active at the position. He will certainly push both Jaybo and Tevin for the #2 spot his redshirt freshman year, but he will not see the field in 2009. I'd bet quite a lot on it.

Spring drills mean a lot for QBs who've never taken a snap from under center, and who aren't up to speed with making the mesh read a few feet from the DL.

I'm almost entirely sure the 3 deep at QB next year will be Josh - Jaybo - Tevin, with Sims and Jordan both redshirting. Now the following year, is up for debate. Could be Josh - Jaybo - Jordan. Could be Josh - Jordan - Sims. Could be Sims - Jordan - Josh for all I know. What I do know is that unless Sims wants to play D next year, he won't see the field, because we've rapidly accumulated athletic QB depth. And with 5 option QBs on the roster for 2009, it's entirely possible that one or two of them rotate into other skill positions to make room for new recruits. Tevin Washington might go A back or WR, and apparently Sims could go safety or CB.

Imagine a Tech fanbase that doesn't have arguments about whether the QB sucks.

Imagine not worrying when we are down to our 3rd string QB.

Boy this is true. Tevin is a fine young player but I see him losing the battle at QB for some reason. Next year, Jaybo is definitely our backup quarterback and when Josh leaves will probably be our starting quarterback too. He's had a phenomenal freshman year and has earned the backup job for next year.

Tevin can't throw the ball 20 yards, I doubt he ever takes a snap here. I don't think anything about Jaybo has been phenomenal, he is a serviceable backup but physically he won't be able to matchup with the QB's coming in this year Luallen, Sims and most likely Aycock.

Really? He can't throw it 20 yards? Wow. Wonder how he ever got a scholarship.

I agree for the most part. I don't think Jaybo is ever going to be the #1 QB at Tech.

Have you seen him throw? I was at fall practices and it wasn't pretty. Maybe he can throw the ball 20 yards but he can't make an effective 20 yard pass. It is no secret that in every fall scrimmage he never threw a pass much less had a pass play called. He is a good athlete though, very good. If he sees the field next year it will be at A-back.

Jaybo just needs to build some more confidence in himself; he gets rattled way too easy. One bad play and it's downhill from there. It's great that he's been able to take a lot of snaps this season both as a starter and backup, I think that's going to help him a great bit and I think his play will improve greatly over the course of spring practice.

We have to remember that Jaybo is a true freshman. There have only been a couple true freshman to quarterback Tech to victories. His two were both over BCS opponents.

He's had a great year for a true freshman. He needs to bulk up a little but I would be surprised to see someone beat him out (other than Josh). Jaybo has a lot of upside.

Some things to note:

(1) Aycock runs a very similar offense right now. He wanted to step in at spring practice and show our guys how it was done. He is more than physically ready. He is flat out an animal. From limited video his passing will need some work, but if it's good enough, he could be ready for PT right away, even if it's just as a third stringer.

(2) Sims is VERY physically ready, but needs reps. A redshirt would not surprise me.

(3) Ditto for Luallen, though he could stand to bulk up a little also.

(4) Jaybo is smart, crafty, and a great competitor. He just needs to bulk up. I think his throws & arm strength could well improve as his body overall gets stronger.

(5) Watch out for Courtney Dalcourt. He is a tech lean, and his film is very impressive. I like his arm & running ability. Very impressed with an interview I heard with him. Obviously very smart. He's the guy not many people know about but could saunter in and blow people away.

I agree for the most part. I don't think Jaybo is ever going to be the #1 QB at Tech.

Even if that's true, he's still going to play an awful lot. If you haven't noticed, QB depth is necessary in this offense like linebacker depth is required for all teams.

Here's what Scout had to say about Tevin:

A pass first quarterback with excellent mobility, Washington uses his elusiveness to scan downfield first, then to take off and run second. He has a quick release and is accurate on the short and intermediate routes. He has nice touch on the long ball, but struggles just a bit if he has to muscle up on a deep out. Deceptively fast, he's not a shake and bake type of runner, but possesses tremendous open field speed - Scott Kennedy

Damn, Esso, what are you doing bringing facts into a pissin' contest? ;)
