Defending CPJ?

CPJ won more games in his first six seasons than any other FB coach at GT. He Has been to 1 Peach Bowl, Two Orange Bowls. ( or 3 BCS/NY6 Bowl gams & Two 10 plus win seasons, Last to do that was Coach Dodd) 3 Time ACC Coach of the Year, 3 ACC Championship game appearances - 1 ACC Title!! The only downfall of CPJ is that he only has 2 wins against UGA!

I guess that would be the biggest "downfall". Others might add a winning % of 58. And that we are 14 - 24 against our consistently played "big" opponents.

But the last year, and hopefully this year, it seems like recruiting is starting to turn. That is where it starts. And it seems we are not having as many defections on signing day. Time will tell.

But 58%, well.

The most frustrating thing is he is SO DAMN CLOSE to being 50 / 50 with ugag.

I'll play.

The only wins against Georgia since the Twin Towers were brought down.

The only trips to the Orange Bowl since Thurgood Marshall was sworn in. The only win since Eisenhower was elected.

Three trips to the ACC Championship game in 8 years. Only FSU is better (4).

Only coach since Bobby Dodd to have multiple 10+ win seasons.

I just get him into third and long situations.

What are some of y'alls go-to stats when defending CPJ? I'm a big fan and couldn't be happier he's our coach, but as y'all know not everyone feels the same way. What are some go-to arguments y'all use to defend him? Preferably stats that reflect on his entire tenure, not just select seasons.

Honestly I've come to the conclusion that it boils down to this:

Do you think the 3O is a gimmicky high school offense? Do you think that cut blocking is for pussies? Do you think that Paul Johnson is stubborn and values his offense more than the success of our program?

If you answered no to all of the above, you probably support PJ wholeheartedly because of his track record and the statistics cited previously. If you answered yes to any of the above, you probably will dislike PJ regardless of any statistics.

This is correct. If CCG had somehow beaten Georgia twice, he would have kept his job. Most opposition is based on "high school" nature of the offense. The only exception is an extremely delusional Tech fan who expects national championship(s).

I don't understand, I'm not trying to start anything controversial. I just got in an argument with someone this morning about CPJ and I was just looking for some more arrows in my quiver.

I haven't given up on him yet, but 3-9 is not acceptable. For many of his years, our defense sucked and in two bowl games, he folded up the tent on offense and stuck a tired defense on the field. The option did not work last year because we had offensive linemen flopping at the feet of defensive players and he won't chastise the OL coach, who is also a lazy recruiter. He needs a bowl game this year to show progress.

I love CPJ and he is the only one I want coaching us, but the stat about winning more games in his first X seasons and having multiple 10+ win seasons are skewed because he's had three 14 game seasons and four 13 game seasons. Still impressive but I agree that the overall winning percentages bring his stats back down to where our other "good" coaches would land.

To me, what makes CPJ the coach I want is the following:

2 wins vs Georgia(not awesome but on par)
Winning record vs Clemson (5-4 including them having an extra home game)
Winning record vs FSU (3-2)
Has beaten every ACC team he's played atleast once(everyone but Louisville [beat Maryland]
3 ACCCG and 1 ACC championship
Won the Orange Bowl
2 wins vs top 5 (Clemson 11 and VPI 09)
3 wins vs top 10 teams (Georgia and MSU 14, FSU 15)
Beat preseason #1 team twice (Uga 08 and usc 12)

This pretty much covers it. For myself, under the current recruiting restrictions and environment the triple option and all its variances are the way to go. It gives us a chance to compete and drives defensive coordinators crazy. For this team, unlike most in the modern era, time of possession is fairly critical. Limiting our opponents possessions and keeping our defense off the field are key in winning games against factories with their endless supply of talent. Personally, I enjoy our offense and think we have a very good coach. Perhaps, not the greatest recruiter but can someone like Dabo or Fisher survive with our recruiting obstacles? Maybe, maybe not.

In today's college landscape you could have Barry Switzer and Pete Carroll as recruiting coordinators and wouldn't finish in the top 25 consistently in recruiting. Too many 4 and 5 stars don't want to get an education in anything but football

My view is prejudiced since I've known PJ for 20 years. We've always gotten along great. Away from the field, he's actually a damn funny guy and great to talk with. And that offense ... been watching it for 30 plus years. I love it. He also doesn't put up with much from his players. I've always thought he'd be a great fit for Tech. I think it's taken a while to figure out how best to recruit to Tech standards.
