Defending CPJ?

Paul Johnson is the coach for this school. We have to be ok with waves of success and ebbs back. We simply cannot be a perrenial power unless significant changes are made to the entire identity of the school. I don't want that to happen and I'm glad we have a steam and a coach that is always fighting to improve and to win.

I will be sad if/when he is let go but he's already one of the longest tenured coaches in the ACC. Longer even than the two coaches with National Championship games on their resumès.

Among P5 coaches only Stoops, Ferentz, Miles, Saban, Patterson, Fitzgerald, Gundy, and Fitzgerald have been at their respective schools longer.

Cutcliffe also started in 2008 at Duke.

So if he goes 3-9 again, you think he is still the answer? Other than 2015, the results have not been very good for quite a while. This year is when he has to show results with a senior qb and a bunch of backs with experience. If the offense isn't better he will have to sacrifice Sewak, finally.

I like Paul and I like his offense. But last year was bad and ate up all the goodwill he bought with the Orange Bowl win.

Ugly wind today. Interior line couldn't clear their big uglies. Outside blocking could not consistently open the edge. Defense was inconsistent in the middle of the field. JT5 just refused to lose on the last two drives.

Much work to accomplish prior to game 2.

For gameday coaching, CPJ looked 100x better than Addazio. Addazio didn't go for the 4th and 1 and then missed the field goal. "Taking the points" often ends up with zero points. Then he went into Prevent Offense mode for his last offensive possession.

CPJ was pretty much vindicated for "timeout management." It worked out much better in the end than if CPJ took the timeouts on defense. If time is an issue, you want to take timeouts on defense, but you also don't want to leave too much time.

I think CPJ's gameday coaching, scheme and technique coaching are all good. If CPJ were to fail, it would be because of recruiting and retention of players.

Johnson "took the points" later in the game.

I don't think kicking the FG was a bad call for BC, their kicker just sucks.

BC had the #3 defense in the nation last year, better than Clemson.

The defense is possibly more worrying than the offense, even though the offense generally looked worse this game. BC is just *really* good on defense.

I like Coach Johnson. However, our offense has not been sharp since Game 3 of last season. Notre Dame stuffed us with penetration of the line of crimmage and coming up fast at the corner. This has become a blueprint for others to follow. We need to make adjustments. Better blocking, better reads from Justin, better execution on the option, and more willingness to throw when corners give us cushion can help. But, we do have some serious offensive issues that need addressing. If we don't make some adjustments it could be a long season. I just wish we could go back to other coaches believing they have to sit back and play assignment defense. That's when we hurt folks.
