Here we are, a little less than three months from TML, and I am curious to take the temperature of Jacket Nation. I am sorry to say I have probably never been less excited about the start of a football season.
What accounts for this? Obviously our sheer ineptitude the past three years. Combined with my doubt that CGC can right the ship this year. Combined with the politicization of the team during COVID and BLM. Combined with the rules changes (transfer portal, NIL, etc.) that have undermined whatever remaining 'for the love of the game' spirit that used to make college football so special. Combined no doubt with the cynicism and world-weariness of a fat old man.
Last year was the first time in almost 20 years that I voluntarily missed a game (just chose to stay out of town rather than come back for one of the games). I also stopped giving to the AA. At this point I'm planning to attend all the games, but man, it wouldn't take much to distract me with something else shiny.
In a way, it doesn't feel good at all – I miss the 'juice'. On the other hand, suddenly I've got more space in my head to think about other things, like that nutty Amber Heard/Johnny Depp relationship. (See, marriage can solve all society's problems.)
