I imagine it would be this:
- Bagman gives money to church
- Church gives goods, services, or money to basketball player

In an extreme example, you could see the bagman donate money earmarked to build a home for the poor, then coordinate with an elder to use his authority to award that house to the player’s family. This would only take two people to orchestrate.
