Finnebaum today

But over the last 20 years the school has become far more academic, the student body has less of a connection to GT athletics, and are generally disinterested in athletics as a whole.

In 2002, people said that about Tech. And while I wasn’t alive, but I’m sure they also said that in 1982.

Yeah but it’s gotten worse. But the best thing we can do for the program is show up at games. If the team is winning and it’s exciting then I think you can make kids into fans. I really didn’t care about football when I was 17-18

People keep repeating these same tired talking points. These things were true 20 years ago. We just went through the 2nd lowest valley in Tech football history. You have to go back literally 100 years to find a 4 year period as bad as this.

There are always going to be anecdotes of people who "aren't into sports" being bandwagon fans of whatever team is winning at the moment. It takes a special kind of douche to do that with your rival. Your friend's wife (I mean husband) is one of those.
FYM.

Liked Key hire however does not feel so good about the future of Ga Tech program,

Guess he thinks we are broke, get no attendance, and not a football school - however he did not elaborate except to go on and say nice things about Key.
It’s real simple.
Either Paul is right, or Cabrera wasn’t lying.

I grew up a GT fan and married a UT girl, but to be fair Tech and Tennessee aren't really rivals anymore so not much conflict. And of course our stadium is named after one of the best players in the history of Tennessee football. And I certainly didn't get to enjoy being a Tennessee fan in the highs of the 90s. I started following them about the time they lost to LSU in 2001 and some new coach down there in Baton Rouge changed CFB as we know it...
Bobby Dodd was my graduation speaker and told some really good stories about how he ended up at UT.

In the games I attended the student section showed out, alot more than our alumni did. A number I would love to see is how many message board posters are season ticket holders.
Been there each season for Chan, Paul and the clown-thick or thin...including the nitwit"money down" and BTL ridiculous sideline hakas.
Before the clown show- I used to enjoy turning around to look up at the west sideline fascia repeater board for our impressive game stats. Looking forward to enjoying that small pleasure again, next season with Coach Key's football team.

Finebaum is an effing SEC butt sniffing, boot licking, idiot. I will say this. He is right about one thing. GT's future isn't good. We are not in a position to start buying kids off, to come play for us. Bama, Uga, Ohio St and such, will continue to have these massive NIL deals. Unless GT has some magical cash cow boosters, we can't complete in that space. So, he is right. It's not that we're broke. It's that we are a real school that makes the student athletes attend a real class, to get a real education. Sorry if that sounded salty, but truth is truth.

I don't understand why anyone takes that skinny bald ööööer seriously. That man makes a living eating sack lunches off Saban's taint.

If you've never noticed, Finebaum doesn't know much of anything about the actual game of football. You never hear him discussing a breakdown of a game...coverages...blocking schemes, etc. He is just a talk show host that studies what notes he is given. I don't much care for him either outside of some decent interviews with writers that cover college football.

No, we weren’t saying this in 1982. Students were heavily engaged in athletics.

You could have been a coach for Collins with that attitude! Elite!

To pile on here, Georgia’s recruiting budget is larger than what we were paying Collins, Key, and Long combined this season. Take into account the coaching salaries, the NIL money… We are not in the same league anymore.

The first order of business for the program in my opinion is to shore up our poor financial position and start consistently putting a product on the field that resembles a football team.

Unless GT’s version of Phil Knight shows up at the AA with a publishers clearinghouse check, it will take a long period of sustained relevance to put GT back on the map. A Frank Beamer or Bobby Bowden. Someone who can widen the fanbase.

I think Stan overreacted to the notion of the "transition" that was ahead of Tech football after CPJ retired and hired a guy who was all into cool and rebranding the program while transitioning. If it had worked, he'd have had a statue in the Callaway Plaza, but it didn't work. We're not recruiting GA much better than we were before and our reputation on the field is horrendous. IMPO, this is why Key opened so many eyes - the game plan, toughness, and resulting wins visibly changed right before our eyes... seemingly overnight. People who had been seeing a team struggle game after game on the field, just not being competitive, while all the marketing talk kept on and on and on, suddenly saw a team that looked and played like a football team.

Key brought us back to where we should have been probably last year: 5 wins - back to middle of the road. To my knowledge, Key hasn't uttered a single marketing slogan yet as HBC. Yet, his teams have been competitive, and he won 50% of them. Folks, like Finebum, saw this and knew that Tech finally had a football coach back on the sideline.

You have a keen eye for the obvious.

This is true. Student section was so full they had to expand it to the upper east.

Plus, Lower East was HUGE! From the end zone to the 50 yard line, and there were no luxury boxes so it ran up under Upper East. Significantly more seats than in Lower North now.
