who has jumped ship?
Totally disagree.
For anyone who's played sports before, especially football, you know this is a part of it. It's never discussed, but you can feel it.
The week leading up to big games, practice is crisper, everyone is jacked, and it's not surprise you play well those weeks.
Then there's the week you're playing po-dunk-ville, and you're not as crisp, you're not as pumped, and you don't play as well.
This stuff happens, alot. There is such a thing as a "trap" game, and USC just experienced it.
You think Washington has anything near the athletes USC does? Hell no, but they played up ,and USC played down, and Washington won.
It happens. It's not a myth.
I believe that Miami had this on their minds for a long time. I also believe that if our team can't get motivated for a nationally televised Thursday night game that would have put us in the top 10, we should just not show up to the rest of the games. You're not going to get a bigger game for us all season than that one, at least in terms of the team's success. That was a HUGE game for whoever won it, and I think you are sorely mistaken if the players weren't acutely aware of that, ESPECIALLY after they supposedly weren't motivated or "let their foot off the gas" for the first two games.
No offense but that's an ignorant statement. You find out what you're made of as a team after a beating. Florida did it last year, and like it or not, they whipped ass outscoring their opponents 469 - 131. Very impressive since 6 of those teams were "ranked, and everyone just loves to be ranked" and 2 of which were #1 at the time
Just because the outcome didn't turn out in our favor doesn't mean that they were UNAWARE of the magnitude of the game last Thursday.
I don't think you can argue this....but by all means I'm all ears
That's what I'm saying. I think they were perfectly aware of the magnitude of Thursday's game, and they weren't lacking any motivation. Especially because, yeah, we beat JSU and Clemson, but remember what they all said after those games about how they needed to stay focused and keep their foot on the gas? So not only did they know it was a big game, but staying focused and motivated was a point of emphasis leading up to it.
They may have found out what they were made of Thursday(although I think UNC will tell us more than that), and a loss can wake you up, but I don't think anything that happened was a result of lack of motivation or focus. I think they were plenty motivated and focused.
How many have jumped ship?
To those who have jumped ship...
I like it. We are barely into the second season of CPJ's tenure and we have already gotten to the point where we lose one game and everyone is asking "What's WRONG?!?!"
One season + three games and just look where the bar is now. Pretty impressive if you ask me.
Jump ship? Go ahead. Your seats won't be there when you decide to change your mind.
I'd say you Kyle, but I'm not sure you've ever been on the TechFan "ship"
On a Spaceship to your planet? Well that seems to be the more logical scenario
I get what you're saying, but no team that is focused makes the mistakes we did. I don't know what the problem was, but as a whole the team was not mentally in the game. That's what I'm saying. Football is such a challenging sport it is rare to find the team that does not have off weeks - some because of a lack of emotion and some because of weak preparation and/or execution. To win 11 or 12 games you have to be lucky and get by on your bad days and be at peak performance at the right time.
Last year Gardner-Webb, LSU, and UVA after the first quarter were our low moments. We got away with one of those and got blown out in the bowl game and lost one we should not have lost against UVA.
In 1990 we were pretty bad at UNC and at home against Va Tech. We got a tie and a win scoring only 6 points against a mediocre VPI if memory seres correct. We were at our best at the right times - Clemson, UVA, UGA, and Nebraska.
Looking back on it, I felt a Miami win over FSU meant a Miami win over us.
Look back at last year. Miami is at home playing their first Thursday night game. They were something like 1-0 or 2-0. I had never seen them look so good. They thought they were back and believed it. I think they KILLED N.C. State, iirc.
Great post. That is why I usually pull for the team we are getting ready to play to lose. Miami after a win at Tallahassee is much stronger than Miami after a loss to the 'Noles. And, though we beat Clemson, their 27-0 run against us shook our confidence. I think if we had not given up the long passes and had beaten Clemson about 38-7 we would have been a more confident team against the 'Canes.
I'm not talking about getting beat on a block, I'm talking about blown assignments, 10 illegal procedure penalties (or however many there were), etc. That's just not having your head in the game and recognizing what's going on. Getting beat by another guy is a different matter. You hate to see it, but sometimes the other guy makes plays.I don't necessarily agree with that either. You can make mistakes even when your 100% focused. Sometimes the outcome is due to the counter of the opponent which may magnify the small hiccups to make them look like huge mistakes.
What particular mistakes are you referring to?
We looked great coming out of the gate, however we came to a screeching hault. Was it neccessarily all on the O or was a lot of it due to the well played assignment defensive package that they threw at us
it was all on their O shredding our D and us not being able to force a punt in the first half. they did punt once but only b/c they didn't want to give us a short field with only a minute or two minutes left in the half. Was it neccessarily all on the O or was a lot of it due to the well played assignment defensive package that they threw at us
