Friday Night Game

So, you don't think GT is an outlier here? You have your head in the sand. The percentage of collegiate athletes playing for a free education in Div. I are in the single digits.

Sorry, if you don't understand that Div. I is big, big business. It's not 1956 anymore.
Regardless of the argument between the two of you, you had the opportunity to say "it's not 1932 anymore" and blew it. You blew it, man!

The TL;DR for the first article is this: 75% of college basketball players and 52% of college football players think they will make it at the next level. Less than 2% of either actually do.

So 52 out of 100 think they are going to be one of the 2 out of 100 - seems like a light bulb would flicker on at some point.
These stats are not interesting. Poll this board on how many people here think they are likely to continue advancing in their current career. Most are going to say yes. People in general think they are better at things than they are. People in general think they are better than they are. This is a theological question, but has nothing to do with the supposed failures of higher education.

Quite the contrary, it is evidence how supportive colleges are of their athletes. Think of it this way... the purpose of these athletes' free educations is to give them a back up plan when their dreams fail. How many young actors / musicians / novelists / etc. get free educations that prepare them for failure? Not many. Think about all the baseball players who choose the minor leagues over a college scholarship. Where are they when they reach 27 and realize it ain't gonna happen?

The purported failure of higher education vis-a-vis athletes is in fact evidence of just the opposite – the best deal that a not-quite-good-enough-for-the-pros athlete could ever imagine.

Actually Tech was pretty mediocre in 1932. I'd take 1956 over 1932 any day.

The other poster just likes to assume he knows the hearts of thousands of young men based on a handful of examples he sees on TV now and then.

The second article is interesting. TL;DR = Rosen, college star now in the NFL (and highly qualified student) says more or less that you don't have time for academics in college.
Do you remember the interview with Adam Gotsis about dealing with Tech academics? He said STTE of "The staff lead you by the hand, they remind you about everything, they have advisors and study halls and everything. It's actually pretty hard to screw up."

In the words of Dorothy Parker, "You can lead a whore to culture but you can't make her think."

what does this have to do with gardening?

So is Louisville really that bad for us to be favored at their place on a Friday night?

I think so.
