FUBO TV adds Bally RSN

Spectrum to offer call package without RSNs.
I posted this in "Pro sports and sports news" but it is worth dropping here too I guess. It's regarding ESPN's recent cuts and the possibility of bankruptcy and what that might mean to the ACC GOR deal.

"I suppose it's impossible to know what these agreements (GOR) actually say since there's so much super secretive treatment about it all. Which, by the way, seems very odd given that the various athletic programs represent mostly public universities. I'm surprised this couldn't be made public via some kind of FOI request even given the consideration that the athletic associations are separate corporate entities. But I'm no lawyer.

Regardless, it would seem of paramount importance to know what the agreements say in the event that the party to which you are bound to by contract is either a) sold from it's parent company into new ownership or b) is forced into bankruptcy. I would assume there is language in the agreement to address these possibilities. I would be very surprised if there isn't a way out for the conferences or DISNEY/ESPN if these possibilities happen.

Bankruptcy or corporate break up for ESPN may have seemed a remote possibility a few years ago. It seems far less so now. And it may become an inevitability if the trends don't change. As it stands, there is no apparent reason to expect things are going to improve. In fact, it would appear things are only accelerating in the negative direction.

We are already seeing the regional networks fall into bankruptcy leaving their broadcast agreements in jeopardy and unclear going forward.

The regional sports networks (RSN) are failing in large part due to
1) overpaying for broadcast rights
2) cord cutting
3) declining advertising revenue in part to fewer viewers from cord cutting and
4) streaming services and legacy cord platforms not willing to pay to carry them because of exorbitant costs.

If the RSN's are getting bled dry into bankruptcy, how long before ESPN runs into the same problems given these same conditions?

If I'm the athletic director or school president at any school, I would sure want to know exactly what the contracts say before I made decisions on which conference you wanted your school to be in for the next several decades based largely on projected TV revenue that may or may not be there in a few years.

Has that BIG 10 deal even been signed yet? Last report was it hasn't been.

Chaos awaits."

I sat at a table at a charity event with a very senior person at Comcast. We discussed the future of cable and his perspective was that we'll see a "great rebundling" where customers will become fed up and force everything back into all encompassing packages like they were pre-streaming.

My perspective is that wouldn't happen and instead we'd see more a la carte options, which will kill niche content providers (not enough people will pay for Hallmark 2 to keep it alive) and will decrease the revenue of sports contracts (if only people who watch sports pay for ESPN, ESPN will have far less revenue to pay for league contracts).

The executive said that wouldn't happen because a la carte would require dozens if not hundreds of options and the cost of running a streaming service is too expensive to justify that. We'll see where it goes. I prefer the control over a la carte, but it's annoying as hell that sometimes I need Paramount+ to watch soccer, sometimes Peacock, sometimes USA network, sometimes FS1, sometimes Apple TV+, etc.

LOL WUT

Each streaming User profile has a boolean value for each channel. When that User tries to use a channel, the system checks the boolean for that channel on the User profile. True = Show the Channel. False = Don't Show the Channel.

Doesn't seem like rocket surgery to me. :dunno:

And Chick-fil-a is made from pink slime.

I just signed up for Spectrum and the cable package that I chose provides all the local channels (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, etc.) and it allows you to pick 15 cable channels, Bally Sports included.

This seems like the best option and likely what other cable providers will emulate.

Damn, I like that. Local channels + 15 cable is probably the most any cable user actually consumes.

Cost?

Would be great if there were a provider that could offer a single interface to access multiple streaming platform content within. So within my navigation I could access Paramount or Apple content seamlessly as if I’m moving through channels.

The services would hate that given they lose a lot of control of advertising/data/etc. but would be a better user experience. Maybe that is what the bundling he refers to will be.
