After watching the Virginia Tech game, I reached a sad conclusion with respect to Coach Chan Gailey. In my humble opinion, he must resign or be fired by no later than the last day of this season.
The second half of this game sealed his fate. He was completely outcoached at halftime by Coach Beamer. His team was unprepared and uninspired in the second half. The offense and the defense were conspicuous by their absence. Painfully poor play calling and horrible execution fed on each other. Ultimately, the head coach must be held responsible.
Since he was fired after his only two years as an NFL head coach, I never considered him a great pro coach. However, he was adequate enough to get and hold coordinator's positions with several NFL teams. It would be in both his and Tech's best interest for him to return to the pro ranks. As Steve Spurrier showed, there are differences between coaching pro and college football that make some coaches effective in one and ineffective in another.
I will not change my mind even if he wins out this year. I have seen all I need to see. I know many people do not agree with me, but I believe they will in the near future.
I also do not care how good a recruiter he is. Recruiting doesn't mean anything if you can't coach effectively. Being a good person does not make one a good coach either. If it did, we could hire my preacher.
I have contributed thousands of dollars to Tech in the past 25 years. I will not contribute another penny until Gailey is gone. I will be writing Dave Braine and Chan Gailey and informing them of this later today.
Anybody who sat through the Virginia Tech game and still thinks Gailey should be our coach is in denial. That was a very sad and persuasive performance. Georgia Tech has never settled for mediocrity in anything, and we shoudn't start now with our football program.
