I tend to think with some additional tutoring he'll be fine.

Agreed. If anything, that's exactly backward. Most people find the first semester to be the hardest in college. One of my old friends is a thoracic surgeon with a position at a prominent research university. He's basically spent the past 25 years rehabilitating his resume from a disastrous first semester in college.

Was he even taking calculus this semester? And are there other players with academic issues right now? Seems rather silly to point to one player and use that as justification for meh recruiting results.

I don’t know man. I almost stayed home after first quarter freshman year. He can turn it around but if he’s not fairly close it will be hard to regain eligibility for next season.
