GT - Clemson sells out

If you have sold out the tickets to date it is time to move the curtain up ten rows and start selling tickets in the lower third of the upper deck. If you sell all of them move the curtain back again. If we know how to move a stadium roof we should know how to draw back drapes. To have moved our best home game off campus to a half used stadium where there are people who might want to buy a ticket but cannot in spite of the fact many seats remain is economic stupidity.

This decision to play an attractive home game at Mercedes is good for that venue, good for opposing fans, great for StubHub, good for media. It is not so good for loyal season ticket holders and contributors who don’t get to be in their box, use those expensive chair seats installed at your location, park in the spot you earned through a hefty contribution, tailgate at your favorite spot and be back on a campus you love. It is bad for students - the most appealing thing about our stadium that other fans praise is the proximity of the stadium to where students live - the buzz around the frats, sororities, and even dorms is a great game day vibe.

The only way to spin this as a positive is to say that playing in the NFL venue is a great recruiting tool. That is not true, or else Pitt and Miami would be the elite programs of the ACC, not Clemson. But, the good thing about Geoff Collins is that he is a team player willing to spin any of our stupid decisions as a recruiting tool and branding idea. He may actually believe what he says. I prefer to think he is just trying to make the best of a bad situation.
Raise the curtain! On both the season and the MBS.

I agree with this. I also agree that the decision to open the upper deck should be flexible. I mean why not? The argument could be it looks bad on tv but hey the falcons exist.
The product we put on the field looks bad so don't think empty seats matter. Besides, most of the upper deck would be orange as most of the GT fans that are going to purchase tickets already have.

I assume they are doing this so that they can say it is a sellout and keep a premium on the ticket pricing. I’m sure they could sell more tickets but maybe not 72k.

The Benz has a ton of premium seats and makes a lot from concessions so GT will make a lot more than they would at a full BDS.

Just to be clear, I don’t consider this a good sign. I, like most, assumed Clemson would be a full sellout when originally envisioned. But we aren’t losing money.

My impression is you limit the seating to the lower deck and sell out to primarily GT fans. If you open it up to the entire stadium the place is going to be flooded with Clemson fans, given the state of the program. Seems smart to me, ideally you keep it feeling like a home game if you can.

They are also likely trying to sell more season tickets by making it now the only way to get tickets for this game...

Also, it's a 8:00 PM kickoff on Monday night. Not an easy sell for a lot of out-of-town Clemson fans or non-season ticket holders who wouldn't get home until 1 am and have work/school the next morning. If it was on Saturday, I'd be more inclined to think the extra revenue would justify opening up the upper level.

Yeah, they’re trying to leverage 3-game and season ticket sales with this, which I guess makes some sense.

The thing that some folks aren’t considering is whether or not this is a home game or a neutral site game. It’s still not clear to me what it actually is. If it’s a neutral site game, then it’s a bad deal for us.

The upper deck was also closed for the UNC game, and they didn’t even have the curtain lowered on the upper deck for that one.

The only way this makes financial sense to me is to put as many Clemson fans in the place as we can, because our attendance is pretty sad right now.

It's hosted by the Peach Bowl Committee/Group/Company/LLC/Corporation/whatever they call themselves.

It's a neutral site game. See? "Our" match up.

This is the main reason. I think if this was on a Saturday, it would be an easy 72k sellout, mainly because of Clemson fans.

So yeah, looks like a neutral site game. That really sucks for us. But didn’t we have a crowd for the UT game on Monday night in 2017? I guess the new stadium, the novel opponent, and the decent finish to 2016 all helped drive that.

Fan sentiment was strong heading into 2017. We were coming off 2/3 really good years. Had beaten Georgia 2/3 and stomped 2 sec teams in bowl games. We were playing a very old rival we hadn’t seen in years, and most expected us to win or compete. We also weren’t punting home conference game to a neutral site.

And MBS was still new and exciting. Weren't we one of the very first games there?

This frickin’ MBS thing gets worse all the time. We give up a home game to play a neutral game in the dome, and then sell fewer tickets to it than we would at home. What kind of clowns are running this thing?

JRjr
You're kidding right? What clowns would actually pay to watch Clemson beat the öööö out of us if they're even close to a .500 season. We can't get 21,250 of our own in our own seats. Wake Up. Why advertise what's not available? Or why would you want 40,000 more Clemson fans

Does anybody know the net profit Tech will make from selling 42,500 tickets to this game? How much are we paying to use MB stadium? What net profit could have we gotten if we just sold this game to Clemson and played them there? What would our profit have been if we played this game on campus and sold out Grant Field? I don't know the answers to any of these questions. I hope somebody who does will post the answers.
We didn't sell 42,500 tickets ... that's guaranteed.

Because Clemson money spends as well as GT money for the GTAA. Since we sold ourselves out for money for these MBS games, so we might as well actually maximize the benefit to ourselves in any way possible.
