GT - Clemson sells out

A couple of thoughts. Comparisons to 2017 are irrelevant. 2017 we were coming off a season beating uga and winning the gator bowl. 3-0 against SEC teams, the fan base was excited. And also like others have said, GTvsUT was an exciting rivalry renewed. This year isn't close to that.

Also as far as Bobby Dodd stadium, quite honestly it is an embarrassment to an engineering school to have such a disjointed facility. The stadium is hideous, the North end zone looks like it was not given any thought to blending in with the stadium. I understand the old U-shaped end zone was too far from the field but the old stadium was a good looking stadium and with fewer upper deck seats. Those newer upper north seats aren't great either, no one is building stadiums anymore with lots of end-zone seating. Honestly I would rather just move all the games to MBS until Tech gets serious about a true stadium upgrade.

And before anyone calls me old, I was a baby when they tore down the old south stands. Never saw them in person but I hate seeing pictures now of what was and thinking who the idiot was who decided to throw it away...

If we ever get Big 10 or SEC money we should 100% tear down and start over with BDS. Not sure the logic of throwing money at the Edge Center if we ever plan to do so though.

I went to most of the Gailey games and a lot of the Johnson games. Attendance was much better than today and the crowds were rocking, but BDS was rarely if ever truly packed.

I remember being at that incredible Wake Forest OT win, when we were ranked #10 and on a six game win streak that included knocking off #4 VT, and seeing plenty of empty seats in the upper north.
Playing in a öööö conference with öööö teams like wake forest, Duke, bc, Syracuse, and Pitt has over time killed interest. Especially so when we are surrounded by the sec and it’s the football that everyone in the country wants to watch. I hate the acc and cannot wait for it to implode. We either catch a break or not, but it’s just a slow death playing a öööö acc schedule.

Rename it while we’re at it for the dumbass decision to leave the sec in the first place.

It is amazing that we have world class architecture and engineering resources and we seem to never utilize them. The decision to add capacity instead of improving the existing seating while achieving ADA compliance is one of many stupid decisions by our AD's.

Great pic man…brings back old memories. Anyone go to GT football camp in the early to mid eighties? I remember those stands vividly.

Attendance was much better than today and the crowds were rocking.

What was the best BDS atmosphere of the CGC era? Holding on for dear life against NC State in 2019?

Most of the games I’ve been to have felt like a morgue in comparison to anything I was at for 2 decades

This. The last 3 years are the anomaly. Stop trying to retroactively öööö all over everything as if it's somehow been this way forever because we only had 51k for a game 10 years ago which we would now be lucky to have 33k

fwiw, I sat in the old South stands for a few games. The seats felt really far away from the field—due to the track circling the field. Wasn’t sad to see them torn down.

From what I understand, the school is limited with what they can do short of a crazy expensive tear down and rebuild. There are OSHA/accessibility issues for parts of the stadium that is grandfathered in (I believe this affects the West stands more). Also, can’t do much on the East with a street so close.

I never understood why they put Wardlaw in the South endzone instead of above the North stands (connected to the Edge Center) then build a 2nd level of stands above the south stands to visually “seal in” the stadium.

I didn’t get it then and I still don’t.

great pic thanks, seems a little different than when i arrived in 74. I sure do remember that little tiny parking lot by smith dorm on north avenue.. I sure as hell don't remember any parking spaces along that freeway frontage road ... Now i wonder if they were still there or maybe they were just full for my entire year in smith?

Let's face it. Tech is flat broke, particularly compared to almost all "Power 5" programs. We all know the reason why, that idiot Braine saddled us with Gaily, Hewitt contracts, followed by more moronic decisions by AD's who were damn idiots. Here is where we are, the best thing we can do is hold our breath and stop living the old days which I love, and realize we need to get out of debt. Sell a couple of "home" games to Georgia and Clemson, hell , we actually play them better in Athens anyway, and get our tails out of the red. Cut our losses, stop the bleeding and start the rebuild with at least some money. Now, as for the topic at hand, I agree, I am not sure why they classify it as a sellout with the upper deck blocked off. That's a joke. Open it up.

I sold peanuts and cokes in the south stands. They were a long ways away.
But I believe the south stands were condemned and had to come down.

Yeah, the Smith lot and the parallel spots along Williams St. were there when I lived on east campus in the early 90s. I got real good at parallel parking on the left side of the road as a result.

That is correct, the disjointedness allows the stadium to remain grandfathered in to not having upgrade everything to modern safety and ADA accessibility building codes, they are technically separate structures on the same site.

The best thing would be to tear down to the old original west stands, leave them in place, and build up something new over them. But perhaps using that history for more than just storage and hype social media videos? 100% agree that one of the best architecture schools in the country can't come up with something great- make it a senior project competition!

Yeah I get the distance and that there were structural issues. Still doesn't excuse the fact our stadium is literally 3 different structures built around Grant Field.

Some of y'all seriously have different ideas of what constitutes a great stadium. I'm sorry some of y'all think a cookie cutter horseshoe is some kind of thing of beauty.

All the best stadiums are quirky and unique imo. I wouldn't have made the north stands so high but BDS is an absolute gem of a cathedral to watch a college football game in. And that's what it's all about for me.

But I'm in the wrong thread, this is where we trash everything about Tech so I'll see my way out.
