GT miracle wins vs epic meltdowns

Vad was lighting them up through the air in the first half. But they scored right before halftime and scored coming out of the half to tighten it up.

I was sick as hell but made it to that game, barely upright. Some old lady Tech fan was sitting next to me, and at halftime she said “we’re just kicking their butts, this isn’t much fun at all” and I told her to be careful what you wish for. Yeah, that really turned out to be “fun,” didn’t it?

I knew when Gurley scored right before halftime that we were in trouble. We had smoked and mirrored them for the first half on defense with their new QB and they finally figured out what we were doing and adjusted. Their D adjusted to our passing game and we could never get our running game going and that ultimately proved to be the difference.

UGA 2008 was not a fluke/upset win. I think we were the better team in 2014 but the way the tying FG worked out was a miracle.

2016 was a close game but not sure miracle.

Not sure why we are doing this to ourselves, but the bad, Joe burns against Maryland 2001.

The good, Kerry Watkins, @Clemson 2000
Yes! I have a hard time flushing this stuff out of my mind as it is without rehearsing it every so often.

You shoulda told the old bat, "look here toots, anytime we can whip that Dawg ass like that for a half is always fun. Why don't you shut your yapper or go back to the K of C hall for (bleeping) bingo night where you belong?"

Another side story to this, involving CPJ.
It was his second year at Southern (and that team just steamrolled people. That was the most fun I have had in a season. Until the very end. Which sucked tremendously. Still not over it. But I digress) and they were at Furman. That's a bitter rivalry and I don't mean just the fan bases or the teams. The administrations hated each other.
Southern is up 28-3 and Greg Hill hits Adrian Peterson with a screen pass for a TD right before half. My buddy who is a Tech season ticket holder was at the game (one of his buddies from law school was a Furman grad and invited him). I came down to sit with him for a bit and right after the score, some old Furman bag went "that's running up the score!" My buddy goes, "lady, it's the first half. They can do whatever they damn well please."
Then we had an encounter with some dustfarter Furman fan at the half, as I was telling my buddy how fun this team was and just how damn funny PJ was, and my buddy said "Why don't you drop him?" but I couldn't because his grandson was with him.

Back to 2013. That team was so puzzling. There were times it looked like worldbeaters and times it couldn't get out of its own way. Remember, we were up two scores early on Miami that year and lost.
And then we go and beat Syracuse at home 56-0. Was that our last shutout of a FBS team?

You know what's really sad?

Our last win against a ranked opponent at BDS was ... wait for it ..... November 11, 2017 against VT.

Does anyone have a stats program that can search to see if this is our longest drought for a home win against a ranked opponent?

Ugh. That was 1999. The one time I've ever attended a game a Wake. What a gut punch. Sandwiched between two awesome wins over Clem's Son and U(sic)GA.
We lost to Wake at home in Chan's first season. Wake was running that wing T thing. They ran 92 plays to our 51 and had the ball all damn day. We let them take the lead with 5 minutes to go. It was kind of a preview of what we would do to teams with CPJ.

Worst games I’ve been to:
- “stay in bounds, Joe Burns…..God damnit”
- 51-7 (the worst of all)
- 2003 Duke watching students come over from the basketball scrimmage to tear down goalposts
- CPJ’s last game in Athens
- the Hutson Mason comeback
- Silicon Valley mud bowl
- UVa hook and ladder
- Maryland sniper loss

But IIRC, Richt going for it on fourth down inside his own 40 midway through the fourth was the key call. He knew if he punted it away, he probably wasn't going to get it back.
The biggest reason we lost that game was the Mutts figuring out they could just run up the gut at will. They always had the capability, it just took them a while to remember they had the size advantage. Once they got going, we were done.

That game was really rough. Probably would have taken it a little less hard knowing what was coming in Athens later that season.

Meltdowns are pretty easy.
  • UVA walk-off hook and ladder
  • Miami game where we got down, came back to take a huge lead, and then blew that huge lead and lost
  • Tennessee in Mercedes Benz
  • At Wake in like 1998(?) with Joe Ham at QB
  • FSU 1992
  • Phantom PI call vs Ga in 1997
FSU '92. I was there. Never experienced such a swing in emotions from euphoria to misery. Could not sleep that night. Btw, Deion was on the sidelines that day.

Wake 98 was senior day and they had like 19-20 seniors on that team

List can't be complete without a nod to the 1980 ND game. That 3-3 tie sure felt like a miracle.

2013 UGA game where we were ahead by 20 points and had totally dominated them in the first half at home. They won in OT

Wow look at that tag from 2013. “One of the nations nastiest rivalries.” CFB really is about what have you done for me lately?
