GT Rivalries

Our rivalries mid-70’s when I was in school were Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee in that order. Clemson, Duke, Navy, Tulane, Notre Dame and South Carolina were regulars on the schedule that felt like rivals to a degree. Add in a few other foes each year like USC, Pitt twice, UVA, UNC, FSU and Miami and my four years at Tech had great schedules.
This. Auburn was a pretty testy back in those days.

The UGA series was hot! After we beat them in 1970, the series record was GT 28, UGA 27, Tie 5. I can easily remember those days and that series was heated! After we beat them my FR year in 1974, the record was 30-29-5 in UGA's favor. Then they beat us 4 mostly very close games to 1 for the rest of the decade to take the series to 34-30-5 by 1979. Herschel Walker and Bill Curry came along, and it was never the same. We've won 2-3 per decade ever since. Sad.

Pre-ACC, Auburn was our second biggest rival, and the probably UT and Bama. During the ACC era it’s been Clemson, our recent woes notwithstanding. Personally I’d next rank VPI and then Miami or FSU next, but I guess it’s Louisville and Wake now ;-)

(Perhaps next year the ACC will decree that our real conference rivals are SMU, Cal, and Stanford)

Of all our rivals, past and present, I would place Auburn and Bama after the mutts. An Auburn fan at my church reminded me Sunday of the old "Wreck Tech" parade at Auburn. We once had an 18-game win streak over them and used to play them, if not all the time, at least some of the time, in Columbus, GA. After those two, I would place Tennessee. There were some awesome games between Neyland and Dodd, whom Neyland hated for not hanging around for his last season. More currently, because of the number of games played, I would say Clemson, and they would be followed by FSU and VPI.
None of those old SEC schools are rivals any more. We never play them.

My acc level of interest:

Clemson
FSU
uNC
(ND)
UVa
VT
Miami
Duke
Pitt
Wake
NcSt
BC
UL
Cuse

So bang up job by the acc scheduling gurus. The bottom half of that league could move up, but it would take 20 years or so.

Tech rivalries can be divided into two groups the old SEC - Dodd days where Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee were primary. And we hated the state of Mississippi so much we wouldn't even play there. These rivalries faded when we went indepenent.

Then we had ACC rivalries. In the 80's when knocking off Maryland was how you won the ACC it was Maryland. In the 90's when FSU was king of the hill it was Free Shoes. For ten years of Coastal chaos when the Tecmo bowl winner usually won the Coastal it was Vippy Sue.

Now...yeah, Wake Forest...I guess...

Addendum: Climpsen and Dook have been "rivals" of convenience and proximity. Nothing has really been on the line nor has there been serious hatred.

Oh wait there was that time Climpsen fans spent a bunch of two dollars bills with tiger paws. What an affront!

But when something is on the line (1990, 2009 ACC CG) Climpsen games are huge.

Clemson is obviously our second biggest rival. It's just a friendly rivalry. Of course, rivalry games are supposed to be close so it hasn't really felt like much of a rivalry recently nor has UGA tbh.

Duke was just a team we played a lot. Sorry to see the series end, but that's just because we lose an easier game. I would make fun of their stadium environment, but honestly I think we're getting close to matching them in that regard and is a legitimate knock against us.

Auburn series was always fun, but I'm pretty sure we have kids on the team who weren't alive last time that was played so it's ancient history. Tennessee never was much of a rival, just a fun opponent. Alabama is pretty much in that same boat, just qualifies for antique status.

We should probably start a regular series with Kennesaw State so we can rack up an early lead in that series since eventually it'll be our main rivalry remaining once cfb consolidates and a new subdivision is made. The good news is that I think we'll be able to be relevant in second tier football like we used to be in the days before cfb became a proxy professional minor league (and before pro football became a serious man's career).

Clemson is pretty much in the same rivalry boat as us. They have SoCar, but who would they say is second?

Not UGAg. They just hate them.
None of the NC or FL schools.

It's pretty much us and Clemson on an island. That's partially because your rival needs to think it's a rivalry too (even if they pretend it isn't). Clemson has always been the football school in the basketball conference. They never really had any team in conference to even consider being a rival until we joined.

ALL games are rivals--eries. Wouldn't call any of them "friendly" on the gridiron.-(TIC), Ugag is in a whole other sphere of hatred and despise.

Clemson was normally a pushover until the late 70’s. We almost never lost to them. IPTAY changed all that.

When your big games are Georgia, Notre Dame, Auburn, and Tennessee, there’s just not much room for Clemson to be one.
