GT vs NIU Predictions

34-17

We miss covering the spread due to late points by NIU but the game is not even close.

This is interesting. Didn't even think about a shutout. That would be an enormous statement. I am listening to Packer/Durham this am and Packer says he is most interested in our Defense.

I'm not sure where everyone is getting the unbridled optimism from. We've scored >28 pts very few times under this coaching staff and NIU got a good transfer QB who is going to put points on the board especially since our strategy is to snap the ball quickly regardless of whether we're keeping pace. You're banking on us being significantly better than last year at every position in order to think we cover the spread.

Our corners and safeties should be fine in man situations, looking at our experience. It should allow us to bring the heat. I expect a Tenuta-esque full game harassment of the QB similar to what we did to Maryland that one season (was it a Thursday night?) when Landry took Maryland's QB McBrien out of the game on an Ill advised QB keeper. Statham came in as a starry eyed freshman and we just were relentless that night on defense. It was a pretty exciting 7-3 win as we scored in the 4th to finally make the endzone. I expect defensively for the wick to be all the way turned up Saturday night on defense AND offense.
There is no excuse with the talent we have on offense not to score at least 5 TD's on offense. Sims is the most promising QB we have had since Godsey. NIU will have to respect his speed and arm strength. Allowing him to break contain is a TD threat, not just running - he can keep a play alive and find the open WR or TE. I am confident in any of our RB's and we have some good WR's with McGowan being the "where did that come from" lightning strike player

We aren't better at every position? I see one player loss that is significant, Camp. I hope we have that covered

Take last years team and give them an even mediocre offensive line and a kicker and your adding at 6-10 ppg easy. We should have at least both of those things.

Give that team a DL that isn’t getting blown off the ball every down and you’re taking the same away from the other team. Our DL should be at least that too.

Now on offense factor in a QB with all the tools with a year under his belt and an entire offseason to improve. A heisman quality RB with a year of experience and a bunch of talent behind him. A WR corps that should be better. Tight ends with actual experience.

Upgrade athleticism at LB and experience at DB coupled with big time talent upgrades at DL and your defense should be significantly better.

Also this great QB transfer for NIU has never had as good of a season in his three years as Sims had in his first.

summary: wtf are you talking about?

You don't actually think we will be better after having an actual off-season and big influx of talent? Even if we haven't improved a lick, we beat 3 P5 teams last year and you are worried about a team that was 0-6 in the MAC last year? I know they have a transfer QB with a whopping 47 percent completion percentage, but still

If we lose to this Draco Malfoy mf, we should fold the program.

On offense, we come out with Patenaude calling an equal balance of run and pass, for some reason. We are effective at running the ball with 2 guys getting ~ 75 yards and adding 2 tds. The passing game on the other hand struggles to get going with Sims and the receivers out of sync. We add a field goal or two to get 17-20 by the half.
Our D plays very well, holding the huskies to 7 or fewer points and forcing a couple of turnovers and sacks.

Patenaude gets an ass chewing by Collins and key at the half and focuses on the run game. Our greater talent and depth wear down niu and we get three rushers over 100 yards and add 3 more tds. Sims amd the receiving corps get it together to get him close to 200 yards.
The D continues its dominance only giving up 2 field goals.

Final: GT 44 - NIU 13

But now for the real prediction you came to enjoy over the course of last season:
Sims. 2 turnovers. 1 fumble. 1 INT.

Patenaude's insistence on balance at all costs was definitely a problem last year. That said, hopefully we are able to move the ball comfortably enough tomorrow that we can work on the passing attack. There's no way we're winning more than a few games without having a semi-reliable air game.

Tech 45-17

I expect to see much improved line play on both sides of the ball, increased speed at LB, and fewer turnovers on O as we are now in year 2 for our 2021 class. Will make a world of difference.
