to get Paul Johnson. He is out of our league. SMU and the Naval Academy are outbidding us...reportedly offering double the money we paid our previous head coach.

Hope the GT "faithful" have learned something in this entire process.

How about;
One, you get what you pay for.
Two, HC salaries should be looked at as investments not expenses.
Three, make a good investment and it will increase the value of your program.

You should only pay the money if you thing you're getting you money's worth?

On the cost of PJ, everyone keeps failing to mention
the buyout of his existing contract with Navy, about
5 million I've heard.

I'm pretty sure that the Army alumni will pick up that bill.

:laugher:

Come on DRad, go ahead and make the call to Statesboro and let's get this over with!! :fingersx:

Jeez, why not wait until the process is done and a coach is hired before doing the post postmortem on the process and the state of our program. We will see who the new coach is and how much he is paid. Until then, drawing conclusions based on rumors doesn't seem to me to make much sense

Perhaps. Perhaps RDad and the powers that be simply aren't willing to spend that much for PJ?

Did we focus on him from the gitgo and say this is our man no matter what? Didn't seem that way to me.

If true or close to the truth, why would we be playing around with him up thru yesterday? Not saying we werent, but seems like somebody is directing a very good game of information shell game.

If not, this is buffoonery.

Hatcher or Fisher is my final answer. Or Neuheisel, or Will or The Joker. Throw in The Riddler too.

What, that we had an absolute bargain in CG? That we were winning, building real depth, improving slowly, and doing it cleanly, for only $1.1M?

That we're in the position Duke has been in since Spurrier left, wishing for top-flight HCs, but settling in the end for someone they could afford, and paying for it in the long run?

That what defines a real fan, in the end, is not bitching about losing to your rival, or "demanding success," or "not accepting mediocrity," but is in fact buying tickets and ponying up some serious cash? And by that definition, GT is bush league?

Whew. That's some expensive lesson. If CH doesn't pan out, y'all can expect one big fat "I told you so" from those of us who never wanted Chan fired.

I hope Chris Hatcher really is the stuff. Because this may be GTs one chance to avoid the long, slow descent to suckdom.

Not sure I did a 'state of our program'...but I can if you wish.

However, I think I am on target that many of our GT fanbase underestimate the difficulty in selecting and obtaining the "right" head coach...whatever that is.

If we cannot afford HC experience, HIRE JT

Based on the hysteria on the boards the last week, you definitely got that right

The more successful and higher profile a coach is, the more $ he's able to command in the open market, it’s that whole supply and demand thing rearing it’s ugly head yet again.

When additional significant factors such as "Old Coach-Dead Money Salary Amortization" and "New Coach Old Contract Buy-Out" are factored into the budgetary equation, the likelihood of such a HC being economically feasible for us diminish incrementally.

Given the apparent harsh financial realities confronting our AD right now, I would almost conclude that the current search might re-focus somewhat and target more of an "Up & Comer" than in the past.

On a brighter and seemingly applicable “historic” note, remember that it wasn't that many years ago that Ohio State was burdened by paying off obligations to two recently deposed HC's and facing an extremely wealthy, influential and disgruntled alumni group when they went upstate to small school powerhouse Youngstown State and snagged their current HC Jim Tressel. What a break that was for them, to find a really bright guy that close by who had familiarity with the state and it's recruiting nuances, and who really WANTED to coach there.

Wouldn't it be something if WE had such an appealing candidate / opportunity?

Oh, wait a minute..... !

Gailey is gone. Get over it.

These "I told you so" posts are stupid.

Paul Johnson is not worth over 2 million a year. He may be worth that at some point in the future, but he's not worth that now. I'd much prefer to hire someone newer for 1.2 and spend the balance on assistants.

I'd have been happy with PJ at 1.5, maybe 1.7 tops, but if Navy and SMU are throwing 2 mil per at him, oh well, time to move on to the next candidate. Note that that's NOT A FAILURE on Tech's part, if anything, it's smart.

I agree 100%. I don't want to over pay for any guy. None of these guys are sure things, so let's just get the guy we can afford. I would rather win and give a guy a raise down the road than look back four years from now and be more behind than now.

my thoughts exactly. Paul Johnson @ 2 mill is not a smart deal for us.
