The key, no pun intended, is the continued development of the OL. That has to happen to give whatever offensive system we install a chance to succeed. Aside from that, QB looks very good and both RB and WR look OK to good. We'll miss McCollum, Carter, and Jenkins. TE needs help. Blackburn and BlackStrain both really need to step up at WR and Rutherford at slot needs a big year. I think all three are capable.I support Key fully. I will not be jumping off the bandwagon but if we perform the same next year then it will be worrying.
He did great this year given all the intangibles. UNC and UGA were good results with a lot of good coaching, given the circumstances.
But UVA and Miami were very bad teams that we lost to. And we won 2 of our games by the skin of our teeth.
Yes a .500 year next season will be fine but if they offense stinks again and we have to be top 5 in the nation in turnover margin to do it, then I will have concerns.
Everyone is assuming Key can get more out of the team but only time will tell.
On D, we lose Thomas and Eley at LB and that alone is major cause for concern. The two of them had over 200 tackles this season. Plus, we lose White at DE, easily our best DL, and Kenny Bennett at DB. Tatum played a lot at LB and should be a capable replacement, but we cannot expect him to make 100+ tackles. As with the OL, most of the rest were FR/SO players, so there should be a general elevation other than those losses. Maybe Yondjouen can take up some of White's slack, he seems to have some speed and quicks. I think we're good at DB.
The most consequential improvement we perhaps can make is at ST. If we can stop giving away field position - especially easy scores of blocked punts and big returns - that alone would be HUGE. We probably win the UVA game with even a decent ST unit, and a couple of other W's maybe aren't so close.
