Heard from a little birdie today....

I think we should have a little sympathy for the victim in this case. Whether or not she was raped, the fact remains that, at one point in time, she felt as though she was - strongly enough to approach the police department about it.

Yes, it is a good thing for Jerrard Tarrant, and for our football team, but there is another person in this.

The case could have been dropped because the DA thought she was lying, it could have been dropped because she decided against it, or it could have been dropped because of insufficient evidence. We don't know enough to make blanket statements of "this is good for all parties."

Of course, though, we don't know if it has been dropped yet or not.

Eh, I don't know that anyone here is lacking sympathy. But we have a great interest in this team and an emotional connection to their well-being and because we want the young men on this team to be successful, the desire to see them come out on the proper end of any ordeal can sometimes be perceived as bias in the worst of ways.

But I think we all have the same good intentions when we say we'd like the thing to be over.

I think we should have a little sympathy for the victim in this case.

First, we have to figure out who the actual victim was. If the girl wasn't raped, and was only making up the story to cover her back with her boyfriend, then Tarrant is the victim. If she was raped (whether or not the case is dropped), then yes, she is the victim and she deserves our sympathy. The problem is no one knows the real story and no one will. If the law decides there was no wrongdoing, we pretty much have to assume the same.

Yep, and if true the MuttButt licking ajc should put it on the front page in bold print that he was cleared......but i won't hold my breath for that!

In my experience with this type of thing, the DA can keep the case open for a long, long time before its officially dropped. In cases where there was press involved, they seem to wait a long time and then just let it go. It wouldn't surprise me if you never hear about it again, because by the time they officially decide to drop the charges it won't be news any more.

or it could have been dropped because it was a misunderstanding between two young people.

That seems highly unfair...

to a person charged with a crime. If they know a case will be dropped for any reason why would you leave the accused in a state of limbo? If he is guilty of a crime and you (meaning the DA) think it can be proved to a judge or jury, bring him to trial. Otherwise, let him and the alledged victim get on with their lives. Isn't this the basic premise of our judicial system? Without closure there will always be those who associate the accused with a crime, whether or not it actually occurred.

Here's a question: if this is just being dragged out, will Tarrant be allowed to play or is Tech's policy to not play any players with charges pending?

I hope the DA isn't a dawg.

He has the right to a speedy trial, right?

presumed guilty until proven innocent?

No. The prosecutor has to take time to reach an appropriate decision and evaluate all the available evidence. No one has presumed him guilty.

When an accusation like this is made it is in everyone's interest that the prosecutor make an informed decision.

Further---we will never know the truth---one way or another. None of us really knows the facts in this case and if you read these comments, you'd think otherwise.

The only fact we know that this is a tragic situation for everyone involved.

If he is innocent I hope the charges are dropped. If he is guilty I hope he goes to jail. Neither of those things are for me to decide.

I think its a system problem. Only so many DA's and tons of cases.

Yah. We don't have enough lawyers.:laugher:

Anyway, if the case is not being pursued then it doesn't seem fair to prevent the kid from playing.

That was my point - if that's the case.

But in the meantime he should be kicked off the team and his football career should be put on hold, if not ended. Should we throw loss of scholarship in there too? To me that sounds like a lot of penalty before given a opportunity to defend yourself at a trial.

Life isn't fair. A criminal charge of this nature is far more important than football. As I said, this is a tragic situation.

Not playing football isn't a penalty that he gets a trial for.

He gets a trial for his liberty over the next 10-30 years.

If you have a problem with the football decision you need to take that up with GT and nearly every other college. Further, having players on a team with pending criminal charges would distract the team from their goals, even if the player was innocent.

Sounds to me like someone had gone the "guilty until proven innocent" route - possibly due to a previous experience in the matter.
