Or are you confusing CPJ's desire to hire Ellis Johnson in 2008? When he instead hired Dave Wommack?

Nope. He wanted someone else. Roof was the only one we could afford.

Maybe pony up some money and get a subscription to somewhere. And I forget who the guy was so not like I can just go google it. I just remember that we were tight on money, CPJ wanted one guy and the money backers mostly wanted Roof because he is GT. So when push came to shove they put their money behind a Roof hire and not the other guy and the other guy went somewhere else for like a million more than what we gave Roof.
 
I think coach Woody will be able to implement his defense fairly easy. His defense requires a lot of hybrid players. The last 2 recruiting classes are full of them.

So if the guy got like $1M+ and you can't even remember his name or where he went; then it sounds like GT made a great decision to go with Roof instead of the no-name guy and save $1M.

Bottom line is we did not go cheap and hire Roof, if anything we overpaid for a DC.
 
I think the players on both sides of the ball will enjoy the play style. I think it will be a great change and one with immediate results both on the field and in the locker room
 
I'd expect us to have the most improved LB corp in the ACC, then next season have the best LB corp in ACC. Think about this:

  • Jaquan Henderson
Rotating in Vic Alexander + Jaquez Jackson + David Curry. Might see some of AJ Gray at LB given how loaded we are at safety.

IMO, Vic Alexander starts.
 
I think this could be a bright change for TECH. We usually get good DB's and Linebackers.
We have a hard time recruiting on the DL. Hence, it cuts down the DL's to say around six or seven.
Have 10 to 12 gifted linebackers and mask your blitz schemes. Somebody should be able to wreak havoc.
Look for some Phillip Wheelers and another Keith Brooking and we will be on fire.
I am already looking forward to next season.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. It's pretty incredible, IMO, that we'll have a 4-LB scheme coming in right when we have tons of LB talent.

I can see it now - 2018 motto: "The Perfect Swarm"
 
Yeah Woody runs a one-gap scheme. That's the most important difference. Guys at the line are generally responsible for 1 gap, thus the LB have more designated run fits as well instead of needing to read and react. The nose is still the most important player, lining up in 0-technique (directly over center), but instead of 2-gap responsibility he still generally has 1, but his alignment doesn't tip the OL off for which gap he'll cover. Since the center has snap responsibilities as well, this maximizes the advantage the nose has. Really pivotal for them to get penetration if they are not double teamed. If they are, it's hard for the O to accomplish because they don't know which gap he'll go for.

Theoretically, a 2-gap scheme allows for better LB play since they don't have designated gap responsibility. However, 2-gap is harder to cover so you end up relying on the LB to read the play and quickly make up for missed assignments. Also, DL have a harder time penetrating with 2-gap responsibility.

Sometimes Woody uses players with 2-gap assignments. What's especially different is there's much more effort to find out what a player is good at and use that strength. We've been asking our players to do things we need them to for the system instead of adapting the system to them. A 1-gap defense is more adaptable.

Love the optimism, but assuming we'll have the best LB corps in the ACC based on 1 current backup who looks really good, 1 player who has barely played and 2 players that have not even enrolled yet is a bit of a stretch. I hope you're right.

Hope this is true, I’m tired of reading every year halfway through the season how “we’re tweaking the defense to simplify things for the players”.
