How Would You React To The Following Coaching Staff?

I would take Joe Hamilton over Eric Zeir every day and twice on Sundays. We know for 100% sure that Joe was a better QB, and will be more dedicated to Tech. We know for 100% sure that the fans will be behind him. We know for 100% sure that he could coach at the college level, because he has an outstanding offer at Maryland.

Err

I have a question for all you people that are not in favor of Eric Zeier. Did every single person on the coaching staff attend Tech? What is the big deal. I have a house that is both UGA and Tech. What really should matter here is let us win some games and have a great QB coach by the name of Eric Zeier because if we don't grab him someone else will.
I don't think it's so important to these folks that all of our staff attended Tech but rather that they didn't go to our public enemy #1. That being said, I'm in agreement. If Zeier can love my team and can make winners out of these kids, then I can be ecstatic to have him. It would make the mutts mad, too.

On the other hand, devisive issues don't tend to help things. A decent handful of Tech fans and alums would remain fervently opposed to the Zeier hire for his whole career here unless he beat UGA consistently and lead us to a BCS-caliber offense. As I've seen with Gailey and others, a handful of disgruntled alums can really raise a stink in the whole program if they want to. But that's true of any organization or group of people...vocal extremists will always muck up both sides of a debate.

In any case, I've heard that GT may announce the OC hire this weekend and that we're very, very happy with the choice.

As ncjacket stated, I could care less where our coaches went to school as long as they are good coaches.

Until Joe gets a degree, his name should not even be mentioned.

Our fans want a good team but some are too busy worrying about where he went to school instead of worrying about whether he has the qualifications to be a good coach.

He's supposedly damn near done, though, isn't he?

I still think it'd be godfarging hilarious to see Eric Zeir wearing a Tech hat singing the ramblin wreck on Fox 5 News.

Re: Err

vinings, if you don't win enough there will be devisive issues no matter who the coaches are. If you do win, nobody cares about this kind of thing. That's why I don't think it should even be a consideration. Hire the best man for the job and then win. Any other concerns are ridiculous.

ncjacket,

I think the point is that Zeier and Hamilton have the same experience coaching, zero. If you remove qualifications, what you have left is a GT grad vs. a UGA grad. They were both great college players and you could give an edge to Joe for playing pro ball longer, but all in all two unproven entities in coaching. So who's the best man? I'd give it to Joe, because he has experience in being a GT S-A and that might help him connect with the players.

Who is this Hamilton guy and did he graduate from Tech or where did he go? Coaches have to start somewhere so what is the big deal that Zeier did not coach yet. Zeier has proved himself in college,NFL and in the Business world. I say bring on Eric and lets win some Tech games and let us win UGA in November.

Re: I don't think he's on your list Techbert. ***

He may not be. That's not what I'm getting at.

There's three possible OC's that have been discussed who would thrill me, including the one you think.

I've tried to keep my opinion out of this thread, but I'll break down and give it. In order of priority:

1. I'd like us to hire an experienced OC who has "been there." "Been there" as in been at the top and won some meaningful games as coaches, and not "been there" as in long on years of experience. Years of experience just hardens stupid people into their stupidity.

2. I'd like to find a slot for Geoff on the field.

3. I'd like to identify any good fits for future changes to the staff.

That's my list. We can take care of #1 now. I think we'll take care of #2 next year.

As far as #3, I just want the guy who will do the best coaching job on the field and the best recruiting job off the field, and mesh well with the other coaches. I don't care where they matriculated. I don't care about their singing voice. I just want us to bring in winners, who will lead us to wins on the field and do it the right way.

Along the way, Chan's hired four assistants that have not exactly blown me away. Three are gone, which is nice. I'm working on giving the fourth the benefit of the doubt.

:wow::wow::wow:

Tell me you're kidding.

Sorry I am new to the Tech area and I did not know about Hamilton and his Tech experience. Nothing against Hamilton I just like Eric Zeier and it just upsets me that people are against him just because he played at UGA. Maybe Tech could use them both and win alot of games.

Not all of us Tech fans were around back when Hamilton played....... It does not matter I am sure Hamilton is a great guy I just think Zeier would be great assest to Tech. Incase you wondering why I support Zeier it is because I followed him at Marietta High School and when at UGA because he was from MHS. I did not pay attention to Tech sports back then but now I am a true Jacket fan and support the team at Tech...................................

I have an interesting take on hiring coaches who attended your rival. I think it can be a plus - when a Dawg tells a recruit and their parents how much better an education at GT is to four years of debauchery in Athens, they will listen all the more to a Dawg grad. The south has had many successful head coaches and assistants who did well whipping up on their alma mater - Dooley at UGA as an Auburn grad, Dodd at Tech as a Tennessee grad, Dye at Auburn as a UGA grad, Donnan at UNC as an NCSU grad, Richt at FSU as a U grad.

With that said, I don't see Zeier as having the coaching qualifications for our current need. But, I am not opposed to the idea of a Dawg letting the world know that he now understands that Tech is a better place to be.

God bless John Dewberry!

Huh?

Well here's your first hint - he played after Zeier.

I'm pretty sure that Hamilton graduated December last year. He's also been around the football team the past year or so and played Arena Football before that. Where has Zeier been?

GT1992, I don't care about who we're naming as OC or any other coach right now. My point is in the abstract....I don't care where someone went to school as long as they can coach. Personally I don't want us hiring ANYBODY who has no coaching experience unless it's as a grad assistant.

Is that a written requirement to be a college football assistant coach? I personally don't care if someone only got through 4th grade, if they understand the game and can effectively teach players and execute a scheme.

Agreed. Football is a lot different from basketball, where you can take a great former player (i.e., Larry Bird) and have them be a relatively successful coach with none of the traditional working up the experience ladder. Offensive Coordinators are not where we experiment with potential coaches.
