I don't understand all the gripe on Womack

Re: Womack is a mean SOB!

This cat is one fired up bad arse MoFo. If you do not play like you're hair is on fire for this dude your butt will be sitting on the pine.

He will kick your arse and then wade into the crowd and deliver bodily harm to the masses. I think you are going to see a big change in the attitude of our defensive personnel. There are probably a few of the choir boys that will want to catch the first train out of town. Those that remain will be some RTMMF's.

The Wo Mack Attack will make you forget about Tenuta's two step.

Go Jackets!

Jerry, what are you basing this on? I'm not saying you are right or wrong. I'm just curious, Do you know about this guy? Can you give us some insight?

I was real excited about getting Van Gorder, he is one kick A. Dcoordinator that will chew you up and spit you out, But, I don't know about Womack, can you educate us?

A few good points you made.

But, we lost a couple of quality Def. ends, but actually we will be more talented at DE next year.

I think this is a slight stretch but not by much. Our DEs next year on paper andf from what we have seen of MJ could be awesome. I really think our defense next year will be VERY good wthout Tenuta for two reasons. Our weakest links will not be exposed nearly as much and we will have help for them back there. Secondly, our offense should control the ball and keep the defense fresh which should help much in the 4th quarter.

I love our defense potential next year. I'm not sure about MB at corner, though. frankly, right now, he's the obvious QB in a Paul Johnson offense and would be evry bit as good as some of Nebraska's QBs in the 80s.

We'll be good along the d-line and whatever position Burnett lines up at.

This is the first time in awhile we haven't had a proven linebacker returning, which is a big worry. AT Barnes seems to be an athletic beast, but he hasn't been on the field enough to make a determination on him. I think he's the best we've got though. I don't know what to think about Bowen. Who's going to be the other linebacker? Braman, Clark, Jefferson, Griffin?

The secondary loses a lot, which might be a good thing. Burnett will obviously be starting somewhere back there and JWD will start at one corner. Who are the other two guys?

Ahaaaaaaaa !!!!!!!!!!
Sounds like a coach that Rmover2 would hire.
The George Patton of football.

Some other interesting stats from same website.

  • Offense, 18th in rushing but 102nd in passing, pulling us down to 66th overall.
  • Rush defense was 12th but passing defense was 32th. Still total defense on yards we were 11th and 17th scoring.
  • We also turned the ball over too much, -.33 pg, ranking 83rd.
  • 39% of our plays were passes, 49% completion, .7 TD/int
  • Our opponents hit 55% completions, 2.2 TD/int. We only got 5 picks.
Clearly our inability to pass was our Achilles heal on offense. The QB play was poor as was the receivers play. Makes you wonder why we passed so much at almost 40% of the time. Only 49% completion indicates not enough short passes to build confidence and rhythm in QB and receivers. Too few TE passes and passes to back out of backfield (a pro offense staple).

On defense the thing that stands out is pass defense, not so much in total yards, but allowing high % (those short out patterns for FD) and a high ratio of TDs/intercepts. Our DB's clearly don't know how to turn and play the ball (or are coached not too).

Re: Tenuta would have produced ...

... a top 20 defense next year. He did it every year with different question marks every year. Someone always filled the positions and stepped up enough to keep the D as one of the best. Next year's D has no more personnel question marks than past defenses and I would feel very confident in it if CJT was staying. In regards to personel, there are no excuses on defense.

However, there is room for excuse in the new DC implementing a new system/philosophy. Tenuta's first year here was his worst by far (ranked around 40ish), even with great personel (Smith, Fox, Wimbush, Hargrove, etc.). So, next year's defensive excuse is not with the player's talent but with their learning to play and produce in the new system. The DC will also have to become acclimated to the offenses in the ACC and to what his players can do in games. These excuses are only valid for the first year. In 2009, it will be time to turn the screws if the D doesn't produce.

Our defensive ranks for the past 5 years

Scoring D
2007 - 17th (4th in conference)
2006 - 27th (7th in conference)
2005 - 23rd (6th in conference)
2004 - 21st (5th in conference)
2003 - 27th (5th in conference)

Total Defense
2007 - 11th (3rd in conference)
2006 - 27th (6th in conference)
2005 - 22nd (7th in conference)
2004 - 12th (4th in conferece)
2003 - 20th (2nd in conference)

So, although those are great numbers, we haven't had a Top 20 defense every year, and we've never even led the conference in defense. He's great, but you're overstating it a little.

Sorry about the slight overstatement of the defensive rankings - I should have said ranked somewhere from 10-30. I think in '02 (Tenuta's first year) we were ranked significantly worse than the last 5.

The last time we didn't have a proven linebacker coming back was when we lost Smith, Fox, and Ather Brown - no starters or even significant contributors returning. The next year we had Gerris Bowers-Wilkinson, Chris Reis, and KaMichael. I remember that being a HUGE concern. Those linebackers did VERY well and we again had a top notch defense. Tenuta's defenses were consistently near the top no matter what new personnel issues came up. Those guys were coached up and produced.

Tenuta is the biggest loss to GT since Friedgen. I fear we will find out just how valuable he was in the near future. But, the bottom line is winning games (with class) whether it's 17-14 or 41-38. Hopefully our gain on offense will be much greater than our loss on defense.

All I want from Tenuta is to win this friggin minor bowl game and not to get the good name of Georgia Tech embarrassed again by losing to a bunch of mal fowls from Fresno State.

If he can get that done then I will grant him a positive place in my hall of Geogia Tech memories.

Go Jackets!

Again we are looking at the potential of next year's defense in a vacuum. So we were in the lower half of the top 20 this year and if Tenuta was here we'd just plug in a half a dozen guys and stay at the same level? What about all those teams rated 20-40 last year? Are any of them going to attempt to improve? Are any of them losing less players than we are and keeping coaching continuity when we aren't? I'd just as soon avoid the gnashing of teeth over Tenuta for the next 6 years like we've had over O'Leary for the last 6.

feel us in on how you know about this guy..

Shows again for pitiful we were on offense. D placed in Top 20 despite being on the field ALL the time.

Not picking on you, because I've seen versions of this statement multiple times. Just want to point out that this year GT was 32nd in the country in time of possession, at 30:54. Our D was actually on the field a little less than half the time. BTW, Navy was 63rd, at 29:49.

Of course, this statistic is not a purely offensive number, because it is affected by the defense's ability to get off the field, either through stops or turnovers. It can also be affected if the D allows the opposing teams to score quickly. Of course, if your offense can score quickly you might dominate the game without dominating TOP. Without having any stats on this, I suspect our perceptions are skewed because GT's offense was feast or famine - several 3-and-outs combined with several long clock-eating drives, many of which did not end with a TD.

I also find it interesting that our Total D was 11th in the country, and 3rd in the ACC, while our Total O was 66th in the country, but also 3rd in the ACC. How comparable are the national statistics, when they can be impacted significantly by the caliber of the offenses and defenses on your schedule?

The Bunger is pretty impressed with this hire. A little stunned actually. I had been hoping there was some way we could manage to retain Tenuta, but I'm more than satisfied with Wommack.

Johnson and Wommack.

I'm sensing some BCS action.

Yes, top 20 in rushing defense, scoring defense, and total defense.

Not to reallly take anything away from Tenuta but the ACC offenses during his tenure have to be worse collection of offenses in a major conference over a 5 year span in the history of football. The conference has had horrible offenses and especially horrible QB play.

Some of these years we were in the top 20 but only 4th or 5th in the conference. Things are changing though. We are getting more good offensive coaches in the league.
