If Chan goes now

Let's think through this scenario for a bit.

What price do we pay? By that, I mean how many games will it cost us in 2003 and 2004? In what areas will we be the worst for it?

Huge stretch, but let's assume for the sake of discussion that we stumble into a much better Head Coach to replace him.

Outside of any financial settlements due Gailey, I don't see any major downside, only positives.
.
1. Fresh start with a new coach and new staff.
.
2. Recruits still will come to Tech because opportunities still exist at most positions. They also will clearly understand that Tech expects success from its coaches and players.
.
3.Excitement about a new coach might just sell a few new seats at BDS. We are going to have plenty of them to go around.
.
4.Donations to the school and GTAA with increase.
.
5.We might even beat Wake Forest.

Topic: If Chan goes now.....

A. It wouldn't be a moment too soon.
B. It would begin to correct the worst coaching hire in history.
C. It would be a nice New Year's present to the entire Tech community.
D. All of the above.

It is my personal belief that a 100% true fan NEVER, EVER, under ANY circumstances says that his/her team will lose. I don't care if you're Valaparaiso going into a game against Miami.
Saying "I'll cheer for my Jacket's but I think we're going to lose this one." Is downright shameful.

You are wrong on number 2, at least for this year. A coaching change at this point, unless it was a very high profile coach (which we are unlikely to attract) would kill recruiting for this year. Long term it is anybody's guess

Big difference in timing. If Chan were to go today we would not likely have a coach until at least mid January. I think it is huge assumption to think a new coach can "salvage" recruiting with only two weeks left to signing day.

If anything, it would show to fans and players that NOONE will accept what has been going on any longer!! That, in itself, should give the program a boost!

If we continue along this route without any MAJOR changes in staff, it will say to fans that we are comfortable with what is going on.

Which way will GT choose? The latter.

71Bee said we stumbled onto a great coach. I'm not worried about recruiting if that has happened. No recruit would jump.

No matter if what you say is true, it would kill recruiting for this year. The staff has been recruiting the current prospects since last spring and I am sure you know that recruiting is a long term process. Any changes to the staff are unlikely to occur until after signing day, unless current members leave for other jobs.

This is all hypothetical, of course...If Chan goes now, it means that Braine and/or Clough have a replacement in pocket. If that's the case, go for it now. Like right now. We can't do it in the middle of the most frenzied part of the recruiting season (mid January). Actually, the time is now or after most other schools have offered and received all or most of their commitments.

At any rate, the next TECH HC must be one that would absolutely kill for this job because he loves this place as much as we do. Of course that means nothing unless he is capable in the coaching, and leadership department. Otherwise, just give the job to me.

Also, it was a mistake to hire an assistant. For reasons of continuity of staff, get a head coach now that can bring in HIS staff. This staff under CCG is a patchwork mess. I might be wrong on this, but check out Jim Grobe at Wake, and countless others.

On the other hand, if Chan stays, he most certainly understands, doesn't he, that he will have to hire the leadership and discipline that he so sorely lacks. Maybe he can be a good general manager type as long as he can attract an OC or DC that will be the passion and fire that we need. See FSU with and without Chuck Amato.

Once again, hypothetical only.

Yeah, the candidates were lining up for miles for this job last year. Let's look at the list:

1. Tom O'Brien - Supposedly DB's first choice, didn't want the job.

2. Mac McWhorter - Interim HC. Had to settle for a position coach job at Texas. No one else this side of West Georgia College and.or Villa Rica HS would consider him for a HC position.

3. Charlie Taafe - Got fired by the Citadel.

4. Ralph Friedgen - Sure he's everybody's favorite, but he ain't coming back.

5. Jimmy Robinson - The Bill Curry clone. GT pedigree, lifetime position coach.

So what coach is out there now, that wasn't out there last year.

Face it, GT is just not that desirable of a job. We're lucky that Chan wanted it. Now give him time to show what he can do.

I think Gailey is going to serve us well.. . not that I am thrilled with the outcome of the season.. but I havent given up on him by far... I think alot of people forget how we looked and played not only this year, but since the Peach Bowl against LSU... we have work to do, but this staff will get it done.

I agree with everything 71bee says. Even if we lose a few recruits we will be better off than keeping a coach and coaching staff that has proven to be incompetent. On the other hand a coaching change might attract a few more quality recruits. Losing or gaining recruits are both intangibles and therefore impossible to measure.

I say we clean house and take whatever risk associated with it. I believe these risk to be less that the ones we take by keeping CG.

Of course all of this is hypothetical since DB will never have the guts to make such a decision. But maybe Clough would follow the lead of his counterpart Adams…………

Dr B, you may be right about there not being a lot of choices right now for a coach however I am inclined to believe that anybody is better than what we have. Two choices come to mind immediately:

Dan Hawkins at Boise State. He has certainly done a great job.

My personal favorite would be Mac. The man deserves a chance. At least the team played inspired football under him.

That is the most pathetic post I have read. If you feel that way why even represent yourself as a fan of Georgia Tech. Tech deserves the best, it's too bad we are stuck with what we have.

Go Jackets!
