If Chan goes now

You see this all the time in business; the Board that won't replace a marginal CEO because they can't see the better replacement. A business forever condemned to be Luke warm.

It does take a certain amount of faith. Faith in yourself (as Board members) that you can do better and the business will be better for it, if not tomorrow at least some day.

I have more faith in Tech that we can do better than this and that the risk is worth taking if we ever want to be better than we are today.

Jerry, you are mistaken. But if you're man enough to take my diploma, my AT contributions, my season tickets, and my kids Tech wardrobe away, bring it on. Sure Tech deserves the "best", but my point is "the best" weren't beating down our doors for the job. To me that says we aren't a desirable job amongst the coaching fraternity. Why? Everybody can complain about Chan, but the best alternative they can come up with (of the pool that actually wanted the job) is Mac McWhorter.

And for thos Mac fans, his choice for OC wasn't BoB, it was Rip Scherer. Remember him?

And, why didn't the Boise State coach throw his name into the ring last year? You can name "potentials" all day long, but the fact is, none of these potentials were jumping up and down for the job when they had the chance.

Dr B, I never heard about Rip Scherer being Mac’s choice for OC. I had done all I could to forget him until you resurrected his name.

I think alot of people forget how we looked and played not only this year, but since the Peach Bowl against LSU... we have work to do, but this staff will get it done.

GO JACKETS!

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">How is that? I'm warm because I don't like to lose and unhappy with what I see on the field, but I'm far from giving up on our head coach after just one year? If you think that's warm, that's your opinion, but what's your explanation for saying I'm very warm?

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">71, pardon my disgust, but please don't use the CEO/leadership analogy here. Most CEO's are bullshit politicians, hired from the outside who don't know squat about their business, are only interested in generating personal wealth thru fudged books and stock options. They can't actually help the business because they don't know it, they can only hurt it by dismantling it or firing long term managers who point out that they are "emperors without clothes". The only exception to this is when the CEO is the person who built the business himself...

Give the current coaching staff the 2003 season, then if that turns sour, I will jump on the bandwagon.

Ramblinwizse1,

I'll grant you a few fit you description but certainly not most (thank God). Nearly all of the ones I know are hardworking, competent, and honest, just like Head Coaches.

Do you think the skills required to be a Head Coach are any different than those of a successful CEO-check with Peter Drucker before you answer that.

Thanks for the advise but I'll keep using the CEO analogy...

Some comments!

The first is there will be no new coach at Tech unless CG were to resign, which is most unlikely and impractical. I would say the chances of this happening is miniscule.

Dr. B, what makes you think there were no qualified coaches beating down the door to coach Tech? I bet Braine had at least 50 resumes on his desk wanting a chance for the job. There are many aspects of the Tech job that would automatically cull a lot of those wanting the job at Tech.

Tech is a first class institution, and there are many that would love to coach at a school with our reputation and follow Heisman, Alexander, and Dodd.

Who turned us down? If you state the Boston College coach, that is not correct. He could not meet the criteria we had set for student athletes. He was culled because he could not qualify under our guidelines. He withdrew his name because he did not qualify.

I believe Tech did the culling and eventually chose the coach we wanted at the time. It was our committee that had a hard time finding the right fit for GT, and necessarily so.

Personally, I am awaiting changes in the staffing of the assistants and coordinators. If these appear to go well, we might be surprised come next year. From the individual play I saw from some individuals, I might expect some of them to be asked to reassess their loyalties or to leave.

If I see no changes in the staff, then I will expect no improvement next year, and will endure another bad season, plus a subsequent dismissal of the head coach.

If there are changes in coordinators, I would love to have them made prior to the recruiting deadline. I believe many recruits would reassess the situation if they thought we would be better coached, at least from the offensive side of the ball.

Anxiously awaiting the badly needed changes!

Agree with the previous post regarding Hawkins at Boise. He is the best coach in the nation who would come here, that is unless we could steal Grobe from Wake, which is tough to do in-conference.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Agree with just about everything you stated. Not that I disagree with the rest, just not sure when the best time for changes needs to take place. Not that minds shouldn't be working towards what's best for GT.

Good Post Ahsoisee!

Dr B I believe TO'B DID want the job but clough would not allow DB to do his job. Think CB will be here next year but strength coach has got to go NOW.

GTTerriffic,

Sorry to take so long to get back to you, family waiting dinner. Wonder how the Southern custom of black-eyed peas and collards on the New Year got started? Sorry, I digress..

Seemed to me you were Luke warm but getting hot under the collar.

Oh yes, your response to Ahso; my concern as well when making the origional posting. Just when is the best time to make a change.

Ramblinwise1,

Wilmington N.C. was a lovely spot in the mid 70's...

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">You still haven't explained how I'm very warm?????

You're winking, but I'm not smiling at your comment. Please explain.

Hope you've had a great New Years Day Dinner in all honesty.
