If Tech Won't Take A GA Boy...

Re: If Tech Won\'t Take A GA Boy...

83jacket, not talking about the "masses" but I am talking about students, including SA's, from this state who want to go to school here. Their parents are paying the taxes to support this school and they deserve preference over a youngster from CA., TX, or NY. It is a state of Georgia university paid for by the taxpayers of Georgia. It is not for the "masses" as evident by the student body size, but it is first and foremost for the state of Georgia and any SA's that can get in ugag should be able to get in GT. If otherwise let us become a private institute like puke u or vandy and stop taking money from the taxpayers of this state.

Re: If Tech Won\'t Take A GA Boy...

anybody know what the average SAT for last year's football recruits was?

And texstinger, can any kid who can get into GA get into Tech? Honest question. IIRC the standards for GA residents was much lower than for out of staters for the overall student body. Of course, the flunk out rate was much higher as well. Seems that was what freshman year was all about, flunking out those who didn't really belong.

Do we really want to do that to our SAs? I say if the coaches and admissions think they can do the work, and there is a major they want to take, give them a shot. If, however, careful review indicates they may not be a good fit or if they really don't want to take anything we have to offer, they are better off going somewhere else. Isn't that what we should be worried about? The kid's best interests?

Re: If Tech Won\'t Take A GA Boy...

Can any kid who can get into ugag get into GT? Course not. Should any SA who can get into ugag from this state be able to get into GT? D^&n right. And spend unlimited money to get the tutors to get the job done. By the way, did anyone read today's article about anti war protest on campus. What was it 16 - 17% of our student body from overseas. Maybe just 3 or 4 of those spots could go to a student from Georgia whose parents are spending their tax dollars here.

Re: If Tech Won\'t Take A GA Boy...

A few questions Texstinger...
Would you rather have had Joe Hamilton or Quincy Carter???
Did you know that the majority of the new buildings on campus are NOT paid for by tax dollars but from private donations in excess of $500 million?
Did you know that Alexander Memorial Colesium was paid and built with private donations? And that in response the Ga. State Legislature then provided taxpayer dollars to build the Dawgs a similar facility? Similar additions to Sanford Stadium have been paid for with tax dollars whereas our renovations to BDS have been nearly all private donations. Please don't use the taxpayer argument because funds have NEVER been distributed equally not even based on per student ratios...
Are you aware that the football teams current roster is very nearly 50%-50% in state/ out of state? Many of our starters are from out of state.
How far did the school lower its academic standards to produce a National Champion in 1990? What was the in state/ out of state ratio??
Under O'Leary how far did the school have to lower academic standards to win three consecutive victories against UGag? Out of State QB's just happened to be the team leaders.
Again... this Institute is about education... at the very highest level... this is not an elitest concept it is a fact... If you are of the win at all costs mindset then college athletics is not for you...
Perhaps while you are changing entrance requirements for student athletes you can also set about to include one more line in our fight song...
How's this??
I'm a ramblin', gamblin', helluva engineer...
except for our team who all happen to be pansy a** liberal arts majors...

GO JACKETS!!! clip the doggies and their lower academic standards!!!

Re: If Tech Won\'t Take A GA Boy...

casbah62, well let us see. JH or QC? I wish we had both (think fridge could have been great for quitsey), but wonder what that question has to do with anything. Buildings on campus, I think paid mainly with tax dollars but do not know. Major contributors get names on buildings, but not because they paid for whole thing but do not know. ugag did get tax dollars for bb court but only because it is used to parade cows and other vermin around in from school of ag. Glad ours is not used for such. sanford & son stadium is like ours and paid for, by state law, strictly with AA funds. For all I care we can have every starter from france if they help us win, as long as the children of the taxpayers of this state have a fair chance to get an education here because they pay our bills. Hard for some people to understand this. We should have the right to accept any SA's that ugag can from this state. This is not dumbing down, it, once again, is about servicing the people who pay your bills. You know, customer service. Why do you expect the taxpayers of this state to give us money and for us to deny their children while taking 17% of our student body from overseas? Win at all cost? What are you talking about. Cheating? How is it cheating to give students from the state of Georgia a chance for an education at GT? Doing what we are doing now is cheating. And elitist.

Re: If Tech Won\'t Take A GA Boy...

It is my understanding that we can accept anyone who qualifies with the minimum SAT scores (as can any school). However, our school has a maximum student capacity which is quite low because GT is not as big as other schools. Thus, we have to select on a formula. We know that 50% accepted will not show up, so we accept twice as many as there is room for. Thus if we can accept on that formula 3000, then we select the top 3000. It seems that we need a bigger school to enable us to accept all qualified Georgia applicants. Also, the Georgia students who don't show up are not GT's fault.

A relevant question: does Ugag accept all qualified Georgia applicants? I dare say that they are in the same dilemma as GT except that they will accept a football player who cannot even pass HS.
