Inside Scoop on Nix/Tenuta

I wouldn't fault him for the scoring defense so much because it's misleading. We gave up so many points through turnovers and poor kickoff coverage. For istance, Maryland scored one offensive touchdown in which they started with the ball in the redzone and yet they scored 23 points. They also gave up 21 meaningless points to Duke. The stats may not show it, but I think the defense played very well.

Eight times this season we gave up 1 offensive TD or fewer. That is unreal.

absolutely...he is a great DC. The only knock is his behavior....and if his game plan is off the mark.

That does influence his stats negatively...when he is on he is really on...when he is off it is bad news. We have seen it happen against Clemson twice, Georgia, Utah, West Virginia, etc. Thank God it is rare!

I do not want to lose Tenuta.

Our D actually kept the Clemson game somewhat close until we found ourselves in Davis/Spiller hell at the end of the 3rd quarter. WVU also had an amazing offense this year, but I must admit that secondary breakdowns played a big role in their comeback.

Too bad we were without are top DB for that game. That was Tenuta's fault (sarcasm).

If our top DB had been there only 1/2 of the secondary would have been useless as opposed to 3/4 of it. Probably wouldn't have made that much of a difference.

pretty funny.

The thing was we did have 4 DB's with lots of PT back there with Jones, Lewis, Roberson, and Word-Daniels...Marius received almost no PT in that game except for special teams.

We made it harder on our LB's...who were obviously confused by their running attack...by leaving our safeties deep even in the 4th qtr when we knew they were going to run and we needed a big stop.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

I love this team we have...I like the staff we have...and I am looking forward to being in South Bend where we will pitch a shutout Labor Day weekend and hopefully Choice runs for 200 yards.

Did you ever think that JT doesn't associate with the other coaches because:

1. He is an outsider that was forced on Chan. He has complete control of the D. Maybe he is treated as an outsider by others in the coaching team and maybe even the head coach.

2. That he gets tired of working with coaches who don't bring the same passion and demand the same of their players that he does. Do you really see Pat Nix demanding performance from Reggie or benching him?

That is why you see parents who see him at little league say he is a super nice guy vs the ones who work with him and do not have the same work ethic or passion to win.

Nah, I doubt anything's got to do with other coaches, I just think he's very driven at work and difficult to be around. At his kid's little league game he's not in charge or responsible. He can just relax and be himself. Around the team he's simply driven and I'm sure can come across as abrasive to a lot of people.

I would think any problems he might have had with Nix would be more centered around his (Nix's) unit's performance on Saturdays and nothing else.

BTW, Tenuta was not liked at UNC and the story about him running off a recruit is true to the best of my knowledge. The kid ended up starting for NCState. That was supposedly one of the reasons Tenuta and Bunting had a falling out.

But bottom line, I'm okay with Nix leaving and Tenuta staying. One day John will likely get his shot at a HC spot and I wish him well when that happens.

This reminds me of yet another weakness of Chan and that is to rotate more people to give them minutes. O'Leary used to have a big problem playing people off the bench. Then all of the sudden, he started getting more people involved.

We can talk about lack of depth all we want to, but when you don't take advantage of what you have then its a moot point.

Chan works with both coordinators prior to games and they make a green light/red light list. In other words...they may say there are 18 players ready to play defense...21 ready for offense (the numbers are just an example, not reality). They will generally use all of those guys. It simply depends on how well they picked up the game plan during the week. Tenuta is extremely tough on DB's as to whether or not they are ready...obviously one blown coverage can kill you. Fortunately we did work in Roberson, Word-Daniels, and Clark (I forgot to mention him earlier) a lot this year...so when Kenny Scott went down we had experienced players to come in. Additionally, we worked in Roberson at all 4 spots as a back-up...so he could do it all.
Offensively we did a lot better this year with OL's. Matter of fact, Howard and Dunmon will be pushing for starting jobs this spring...putting pressure on current starters.

From reading the posts in this thread one would be inclined to believe Coach Tenuta devours babies for breakfast. The simple fact is if he doesn't respect you he won't be cordial to you. That's it. If he likes you or more importantly you show him you're not intimidated by his personality then he's one of the coolest guys to be around. I know this first hand.

and from what my boss tells me O'Leary was the same way. I wasn't around the GTAA back then so I wouldn't know.

The problem is Tenuta disrespects people he has never met. At least O'Leary smiled and shook your hand....then waited for you to say something stupid before he cut you off at the knees! :laugher:

We need more of that, IMO, to send us over the top.

Semisigged.

A small, vocal minority of GT fans has never and will never accept Tenuta as a viable HC.;)

Jon is a lot like Bill Belichick who is one of the most obnoxious/but effective coaches in the NFL--Go figure??

Y'all heard the John Tenuta radio commercial for Jim Ellis?

Not ONE single obsenity uttered. In fact, he has a pretty good radio voice....

Not ONE single obsenity uttered.
I've got a copy of the unedited version. Here's the transcript:

***

"These Muther****ing pickup trucks out here at Jim Ellis are goddamn beefcake. Everyone should get one of these ****ers, from hicks to spicks to kikes, mooks to wetbacks to whiteys. Oh, and African Americans too. This is no p***y truck, friends, you can even sqash babies with it. Watch this."

Then he totally backs this F150 over a screaming infant in a stroller, and guts spew out the side of the baby carriage. While smoking a cigar.

"See that? Dead babies is the true sign of power in this world. Don't you forget it. Come to Jim Ellis so you can crush babies to a bloody pulp, just like me, Jon Tenuta."

***

I think he'd make a pretty good head coach.

Tenuta: Jim Ellis, let me make you a deal alright; I'll make your commercial, you keep your money an' I'll get your baby.
