It tells me he has a lot of heart and loves the game. I'm not saying he won't be succesful just that he won't be succesful based solely on the fact that he is a good motivator and high energy. There are unkowns surrounding all candidates, I just think Muschamp has the most unknowns surrounding him. Rad knows more than I obviously, so I will abide by his decision, but he's coming in w/ one strike against him already to many fans.
You are certainly right, he's not going to win games because he is high energy. I would say that being highly motivational
will help win some games, though. At the college level, being able to motivate kids is critical, and having a guy that is teaching in-game and on top of kids is important. That was a huge knock on our most recent staff - kids were left on the bench without instruction during the game.
What are the qualities that you believe would make a coach successful? What are his unknowns - from a AD perspective, not because you don't know much about him. I think his unknowns are how he will perform as a HC rather than as an assistant. The fact that he's worked under such strong head coaches can lead you one of two ways - he's either learned from the best or he's hiding behind the best. That is an unknown, but its also a matter of personal opinion and how a person feels about
any coach in that situation. I saw a quote today where Jimbo Fischer said Muschamp didn't get enough credit for his work at LSU, so that's one data point that leads me to believe he's learned from the best.
On the flip side, Hatcher is an unknown in that he's never been a coordinator or HC at a D1 school. How will he handle the increased work load? He's certainly not hiding behind anyone, because he's been an HC. But there are big unknowns on the experience side with D1 schools. Does he have enough connections at the D1 level to find the right quality of assistants? Those seem to be the unknowns there.
Johnson probably has the least amount of unknowns - D1 coordinator, D1 head coach, successful in almost everyone situation he's been in. Biggest unknown is can he run a more comprehensive offense, although I think its proven that he can and will (Hawaii experience, Tracy Ham at Southern).
I'm actually fine with any of these guys, I think they all have the potential to do a good job. The key is going to be finding the staff that fills in the blanks.
